..apparently. When I was born, my parents didn't have a whole lot of money. Well-educated, but working class. They were upwardly mobile.
Its weird, now, because they're on the upper end of the middle class now and they're behind me, so...that's great and all, BUT...
...now that my mind has been restored, I can see how the social class system, and good ole fashioned Southern Snobbery ruined my life for a season.
Too "working class" for the church we attended. Never mind that both my parents come from Calvinist backgrounds and both went to private, Calvinist colleges for undergrad. When my mother became an elder, the church politics destroyed her faith.
I was too working class for honors and gifted and talented. I didn't realize it then, but I do now. Most of the other poor and working class kids mysteriously disappeared by 9th grade, especially the black kids. Oh well.
Then, I was too working class or too "rinky dink middle class" for college. When I went off to a counseling center on campus, I was drugged to the gills. I've only now recovered.
So..yeah. Its so strange. All these things I thought were my parents' fault or my fault or just...I dunno...fate or something...social class issues. Especially in this part of the south, social class=EVERYTHING, apparently.
I'm blessed. My parents are blessed. That's not the issue. The issue is that I'm just one person who's suffered mightily for being "out of my element" by virtue of coming from a once working class, then "rinky dink middle class" family. Ugh.
When you put it all together, its disgusting. I think maybe the south is worse than other places in this regard. Something about how everyone is supposed to "know their place" or something. I dunno.
