Some possible good news to share

While I was at work on Sunday I was bitten/stung by something under my chin and we're required to call the medics when that happens so that it can be documented. So the medic comes to see me and I mentioned that I am a EMT and asked if he had remembered talking to me when I went in for my drug test.

He said that he vaguely remembers and asked if I would be interested in transferring to his department as an EMT. I let him know that my certification expires in December and he said that they can help me with that. I also let him know that my CPR card isn't current and he let me know that they can work with me on that as well.

They are desperate for EMTs right now and since I am one and in the park "family" that transferring for me would be easy.

This would be a great opportunity for me. It gets me back into the field that I love and would allow me to work around my hand issue. I won't be out on an ambulance each shift lifting every time there is a call. This would be perfect.

My only concern is the hours. I know he said that they're hurting currently, but I also know he said that the EMTs don't work many hours. I would need the same amount of hours or a large increase in pay to cover the hours that I would lose.

With that said, I am conflicted. I want to be able to work as an EMT again and this would allow me to do so, but I also don't want to lose hours.

I talk with the guy tomorrow.

Please pray for me that this will work out.

You have my prayers. :pray

I know what you mean too. In order to get into my chosen field I had to take a 50% pay cut. I worked in the steel mill (13 years) that paid just under $11/hr but as an electronics technician I'd be paid a little more than $5/hr.
But in my case I had no choice. The steel mills shut down and I needed work.
Yeah, it was tough for a few years. (understatement) But being that I had my "foot in the door" I was able to gradually climb the salary ladder through more education (while still on the job), finding a stable industry (some industries are superseded by others due to changing technologies) and sometimes even moving state to state to "follow the buffalo".

In the end though it all worked out.
If you love your field there is always room for advancement. But then, it's up to you what you are willing to do or give up to get there.
