space to repent

Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
Rev 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

I would be interested in any thoughts on these two verses, but the phrase that catches my eye is "space to repent". How long do you believe this is, and why? Who is this Jezebel?

Hi Gabby,

NASB reads 'time to repent' . . .

How long do you believe this is, and why? Who is this Jezebel? Do you believe that this is an actual person, or a spiritual thing, like maybe an attitude?

Is this a trick question?

1 Kings 16:31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

1 Ki 18:13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the Lord's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

She was a queen who called herself a prophetess. She turned her husband, Ahab, away from the One true God of Israel, only to wind up worshipping Baal. John uses the name in Revelation to compare the prophetess of the city of Thyatira to this OT Jezebel. (remember, he is writing to the church in Thyatira) What was going on in this church was akin to what happened in the OT.

No need to use the prophetess of Thyatira's real name, the readers would have known what John was writing about. ;-)

I can't speculate on the timeframe given to repent.

Nope. Not a trick question. I am familiar with the Jezebel in the Old Testament. I had not considered so much the Jezebel in the time of John. Although I know Johns letter was to the church that existed at that time.
I was thinking in the terms of the prophetic.
Many believe that the seven letters to the seven churches have prophetic words in them, just like the rest of the Word is living and active in believers.
This statement from the letter:

Rev 2:25 But that which ye have [already] hold fast till I come.
Rev 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

...causes me to believe that this letter applies to believers throughout history. He instructs those who are addressed by this letter to "hold fast till I come" and "keepeth my works unto the end". So, I am wondering if there is a Jezebel in the end times, associated with the beast. So, this is I am wondering, and was hoping some of you Revelation scholars could answer.

The Letter to the Church in Thyatira

Rev 2:18 ¶ And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet [are] like fine brass;
Rev 2:19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last [to be] more than the first.
Rev 2:22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
Rev 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
Rev 2:24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
Rev 2:25 But that which ye have [already] hold fast till I come.
Rev 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Rev 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
Rev 2:28 And I will give him the morning star.

In this and all instances 'sufficiently long', I can't put a specific time on it. The apostle Peter talks about 'reaching repentance' so time is one thing - but if the motive is lacking then repentance is not reached. In Jezebel's case her intentions are clear 'but she would not'.

Who is Jezebel?

As pointed out there is the link to Ahab. In the book of revelation I think John uses 'Jezebel' as an end product title because she refuses to repent. I don't think Jezebel was her real name - nor do we know if she was ever on the right track - though this is a possibility - did she have a prophetic gift gone wrong? So yes, an actual person is being referred to in type if you like. It is one thing to injure oneself and another to hurt others - Jezebel was dangerous to the church.
