Unfortunately, many people don't know the difference between God's words and people's 'interpretation" of God's words (putting one's own slant on it). But if people don't know the difference between God's word and people's interpretation of it, then they will never know when someone is speaking the word of God. :(

The reason for that confusion is that God has allowed Satan to blind the minds of humanity to the truth of His word so that only the Holy Spirit can give a person the faith to believe it. Most people don't have a problem understanding other books or the words that people say in the world as they do with the bible. That's because Satan isn't trying to keep people from believing what secular authors are saying. Satan also entices us to put our faith in people, whether theologians, pastors, an earthly king, if you will, that the Jews also wanted because they had little faith in an invisible being, instead of God alone. It's no different today.

When a person reads the bible with faith, then it becomes easy enough for a child to understand. It has to because MT. 11;25 tells us that God has hidden the truth from those who claim to be "wise and learned' and revealed it to little children. So all one needs is the faith of a child to understand the bible. And that's precisely why we are not to put our trust in the "wise and learned" of the secular world. All one has to do is look at the horrible chaos of the secular world who rejects God and can only put their faith in the "'wise and learned" of "higher education" to see how untrustworthy the secular world is. So when one reads the bible with the faith of a child, then it's easy to understand.

For example, when someone says; "I'm hungry" one doesn't have to spend hours or years trying to figure out what he means. :lol He understands it within seconds. Then he can respond to it and conversations can ensue. But since most people don't read the bible with faith, then simple statements like; "And do not be called teacher for you have one teacher and that is Christ" can be argued with, disagreed with and discussed endlessly. :eek2

But once it's read with faith, then it not only becomes simple, it's easy to see what Jesus means, especially when his statement is confirmed by the lies, confusion and sin of the secular world. So when one reads MT. 23:10 with faith, he can easily see that reality confirms Christ's statement.

So if you want to know when someone is speaking the word of God, read and believe the bible as written. And if people are passing along the bible as written without putting their own slant on it, they are speaking the word of God.

Not sure how many different threads we have to cover this in.

It is not that simple!!!

Context, context, context!

Sure, a lot of passages are clear enough. Others cannot be understood appropriately unless you understand the history, author and context of the work that was written. It has nothing to do with Satan. By saying that you are basically trying to shut down the discussion and tell people they are evil for not "just believing". Again, in order to believe understanding has to occur first. Without understanding, one cannot come to believe.

Actually, one can understand the history simply by reading the bible. It's the most detailed history of a people ever written. ;)

You are correct. Heidi's position on this is naive and unworkable.

One can have someunderstanding of history by reading the Bible, sure. Not a complete understanding. You can't understand how a piece of art was inspired unless you understand the history of the artist themselves.

For instance, a majority of the NT is written by Paul. Does that matter or should we ignore his circumstances, context and history when he wrote it and only pay attention to the words he wrote? In order to truly and completely understand what Paul is stating / writing an understanding of him and his situation is preferable. It enriches the content and provides a better understanding of the material. Knowing what I know about Paul and why he wrote some of the chapters of the NT helps me as a Christian and I still have more to learn.

So why do you need to know about art to understand the bible? :gah
