Bible Study Starting fresh

I am trying to build a relationship with God and I know one of the most important things I can do is study his word. This is something that i have not really done in the past and was just wondering where to begin. I got a book called 30 Days to Understanding the Bible to start off with. I was just looking for some advice on where to begin. Thanks!

Hi, it is all about your total sincerity!:thumbsup
Does one TRUELY BELIEVE GOD'S WORD? Check it out here & then find that most believe satan instead of [Christ/God's WORD!] (as is taught today)
Gen.3

[1] Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
[2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
[3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
[4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Dave, where did you go?;)
In Gen. 2 is found much more Truth stated by an NEVER CHANGING GOD!:thumbsup Mal. 3:6 + Heb. 13:8

Gen. 2
[7] And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man [[became a living soul.]]

[8] And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
[9] And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Why was this tree put in the very midst of the garden of Eden? Salvation hangs on the Lord's total freedom of His Government's Foundation with that question!

Hi Dave,

If you're looking to get into the Bible, a good place to start is one (or more) of the Gospels. I've often found Luke to be a good account, and I've been getting into John recently.

It depends though...how much 'Bible knowledge' you already have, and what you are trying to gain from this urge to study the Bible. Reading some Old Testament books is a great idea. It is essential to grasp what the whole of the Bible means, not just what Jesus & Co say in the New Testament.

I would suggest going to a local Bible study group.

Yes, I would recommend the Book of John as well for an excellent place to start.

Read whole books of the Bible, don't jump around from place to place reading small snippets here and there. The authors wrote what they did as whole thoughts, often making points over several page. If you read small sections here and there, it's very easy to miss the author's point and come to mistaken, if honest, conclusions about what was actually being taught.

Oh yeah, take your time. Read slowly enough to understand what is being said. Don't get frustrated if you start a Bible in a Year schedule and fall behind. Trying to read extra to catch up will only frustrate you, inhibit your comprehension of the text, and cause you to give entirely.

Hi again. In the N.T. we see Inspiration with a couple 'jewels' from Christ's own WORD!:thumbsup
Matt. 4
[3] And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
[4] But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

That means the complete 66 Book's, right? In fact Christ used the OT verse for where it was Inspired! Deut. 8:3

Also note 2 Tim. 3:16 Holy Spirit's AGREEMENT in the N.T.!
[15] And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
[16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

This surely tell's us that we are required to understand the doctrine of Bible Knowledge by using the whole Book? Here is a OT verse that most 'students' seem to by/pass, perhaps it is to deep for them? It is found in Isa. 28. See if you can gleem anything from it? It surely is not like what one hears today.

Isa. 28
[7] But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
(false teachings)

[8] For all [tables] are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
(tables are where one looks for spiritual food! see Psalms 69:20-28 & verse 22 & 23 in particular)

[9] Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
(see Heb. 5)

[10] For precept [[[must be]]] upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little::study

Dave, I know this post is a little old and I don't know if you're still checking it but I just wanted to mention one thing with regards to studying the Bible - Pray. This sounds simple but often times we have so many ways to approach the Word but we forget the very basic understanding that it is God's Word and it is His Spirit that will help you understand it. God knows where everyone is at - talk to Him before you dive in. Be blessed!

Simple. Focus solely on your walk. Get correct doctrine, and don't just accept what any preacher says, check both sides of the argument. I would recommend listening to Edward Fudge, or reading his book "The Fire That Consumes". Also I recommend (as many do not do this) checking everything you hear against scripture. A good version is the amplified bible, hcsb, or the world english bible (not fully completed but you can access it online its my fave translation). Also get a good literal version like Youngs literal translation or Rotherham's emphasized bible (my fave literal version).

Make your walk your own, be certain what you believe, and be certain its scriptural. Much of what the modern majority believes today is heresy. Be quick to discard such false teaching, and such churches. The glitz and glamour of modern christianity is killing it. But the remnant will always remain.

Good luck and God bless.
