CHICAGO  Could you use more brainpower?

"Nature apparently thinks you can, according to two University of Chicago studies providing the first scientific evidence that the human brain is still evolving, a process that may increase people's capacity to grow smarter.

Two key brain-building genes, which underwent dramatic changes in the past that coincided with huge leaps in human intellectual development, are undergoing rapid mutations, evolution's way of selecting for new beneficial traits, Bruce Lahn and his University of Chicago colleagues reported in today's issue of the journal Science....."

I can accept that the human brain was still evolving in recent history, but I can't believe that humanity is still evolving in the 21st century. Natural selection is needed for evolution, and quite simply we do not allow nature to make it's selection anymore. In the past, your own brainpower contributed highly to your survival--today the brainpower of millions of others who have established amazing medical technology, food distribution systems, sanitation systems, etc allows those to survive who would surely perish if relying on themselves. The only way humans are going to be evolving are if society selects against those with less brain power, and can you really see the day when chicks swoon over nerds instead of jocks?

So why is humanity closer to self-ahhihilation then ever before? :o

I saw that article in this morning's paper. What I had to wonder is how could scientists tell the brain underwent a 37,000 years ago? What brain do they have that's 37,000 years old??

I did find it interesting that they say the brain underwent a dramatic change about 5700 years ago. Thta would be about the time of Abraham, but again, where are they actually observing these changes?

Good question! The simple truth is that every single human being today is born with the exact same genetic potential as they've always been born with! Whatever "technological advances" made by men today are the results of generations and generations of thinkers who have lived since the beginning of time. Yet people are easily duped into thinking that every person born today was born with this knowledge! Pure nonsense. Humans learn what is taught to them by the society in which they live.

No, that's a simple lie, as these scientists have shown. Try again.

Actually, Abraham lived about 4,000 years ago. 5700 puts you back to Adam, according to Biblical chronology.

I guess I did over estimate a bit there (all those long-lived Patriarchs  ). Still I wonder what the uncertainity is on that "5700 year number". Studies in the general news NEVER quote the uncertainity.

And did you see the error on that timeline? They had Arphaxad being born before the Flood, instead of two years after.
