Stopping Forum Spammers

Has anyone figured out a low maintenance way to stop spammers from signing up on forums? I'm using phpbb.
 
Capacha can be a big help as far as bots signing up. But you can also approve all sign ups yourself.

Set up a member ranking where new members have limited abilities as posting and all goes. A layered deterrent helps but there is no 100% fix short of closing the forum to new members.
 
You may have a hack at phpbb to stop spam. Not sure though.
 
FYI- I ended up going with SMF and haven't had any problems since.
