I was amazed when our biology teacher taught us (5000yrs ago): "female mosquitoes bite and suck our blood" she went on to say, "male mosquitoes don't bite humans. They feed on plant juices and nectar, as well as the female ones that also feed on nectar and pant juice stuff."

The emphasis that caused the uproar in class that day was: female mosquitoes suck blood.

No idea why the world has taken this shape.

Female mosquitos are fine with plant nectar unless they want to breed. In order to produce eggs they need proteines that they can't get unless they suck some blood. So they only do it for their babies. :yes
Fun fact, mosquitos have been found to prefere biting pregnant women.
