Artie Lange tried to commit suicide in his Hoboken apartment
By Margaret Schmidt/The Jersey Journal
January 07, 2010, 9:51AM

Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Lange's frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law-enforcement source said. Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange's management team confirmed that the Howard Stern sidekick stabbed himself, adding that his mother had come to visit him that day to drop off food. Surgeons managed to save Lange despite heavy bleeding. "We all have our demons," Stern said on-air this week, referring to Lange's past battles with addiction. "Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He's a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don't forget how great he is."

Not really a 'gun' topic, Rick...more showing that suicidal persons WILL use OTHER methods when no gun is available.
The other thread was locked before I was allowed to present support of this fact.

Half of Gun Deaths Are Suicides
Tuesday July 1, 2008

Research shows that surprisingly often gun deaths are self-inflicted.

In 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicides accounted for 55% of the nation's nearly 31,000 firearm deaths.

In the same year, 40% of deaths were homicides, 3% were accidents and the remaining 2% were "legal killings", such as when police officers do the shooting in the course of duty.

Nor was there anything unique about that particular year. Gun-related have suicides outnumbered firearm homicides and accidents for 20 of the last 25 years, according to CDC statistics.

Last week, opponents of the Supreme Court's recent landmark ruling on gun ownership had used these statistics and others in an attempt to block the ruling, but were unsuccessful.
Apparently HALF of suicides are with a gun....leaving the REST to have turned to OTHER means when they dont have a gun.
A person who WANTS to die WILL find a way.

Anecdotal. Nobody is saying that some people will not use a means other than a gun to commit crime or kill themselves. The real question is this: Does the presence of the gun make such events more probable than they otherwise would be?. A related question, of course, is this one: " Does the self-defence value of a gun outweight the likelihood that the gun will be used to commit a crime or to commit suicide?'

Neither side on the gun issue should be presenting anecdotal accounts as if they were useful evidence.

We would also have to take into account the fact that nearly all people who commit suicide using a gun would simply commit suicide in some other way if guns were not available (proven fact) and that many people who are murdered with a gun would simply be murdered in another way if guns were not available. That is, the current gun murders and gun suicides would not "go away" if guns went away, they would just convert to some other kinds of murder and suicide.

This claim needs to be supported. It may have a degree of common sense appeal, but common sense is not always a reliable guide.

And Ill be putting you on my ignore list effective immediately.
I'll keep posting the facts and wont be responding to anything you have to say given that its unsafe to post in your direction.

Again, this is merely a statement - the article claims that something is a "proven fact" but does not support the claim with actual evidence.

Some anti-gun-rights groups will try to argue that gun ownership somehow causes increased suicide rates. This is similar to the equally incorrect assertion that the presence of guns leads to crime. The fact is, those who are serious about committing suicide will do so, and many of them choose guns for a variety of practical reasons. Allow me to elaborate:

Gun ownership does not cause suicide
The mere presence of guns has not been shown to cause suicides, just as the mere presence of guns has not been shown to cause homicides. Instead, those who commit suicide suffer from mental issues, and if they could not gain access to a gun, they would use another means of committing suicide. Such is the case in countries such as Germany and Japan, where the suicide rate is considerably higher than the U.S., yet gun ownership is considerably lower. For those interested, the detailed statistics can be seen here.

People who use guns to commit suicide do so for practical reasons, not because the gun “made them do it.â€
The people in the United States who choose to commit suicide use a gun about half the time. This is for the simple reason that guns are an effective way of ending human life.

It is unfortunate and tragic that a person would turn a tool of self defense upon themselves, rather than using that tool to save their life from a criminal, however it is not the tool that made the person commit suicide. Nor it is justifiably to try to take away the gun ownership rights of non suicidal people such as this author, just because some people choose to misuse guns in that manner.

Sadly, some people from anti-gun-rights groups will attempt to bend the facts about suicides and guns in order to further their agendas. Hopefully this article has provided a brief overview of the fact. Those seeking a more in depth discussion, complete with stats, can look here.

Gun suicides tend to be successful. But this does not mean that if you took away the guns, people wouldn't commit suicide. There are many other near-surefire ways of killing yourself, like jumping off a high bridge, gassing yourself with carbon monoxide, driving your car at high speed into a piling, hanging yourself, etc.

Again, the mere existence of alternate means by which people could kill themselves is not evidence that such alternate means will actually be used.
