Barna Survey Offers a Profile of How Americans See Themselves

An analysis of how Americans perceive themselves in relation to 33 different descriptions studied in research conducted by The Barna Group reveals that adults generally see themselves as good people, spiritually stable, and living a good and honorable life.

Yet, despite the spiritual focus people claim, the study found that people’s lifestyles, attitudes and self-perceptions are more likely to be affected by their life-stage and ethnic culture than by their faith commitments. Most adults said they are “a good citizen†(97%), “friendly†(94%) and “generous†(90%). At least eight out of ten claimed to “feel at peace†(83%), to be “clear about the meaning and purpose of your life†(81%), and to be ââ‚Å“making a positive difference in the world†(80%).

I wonder if the results would be the same if our neighbour answered the questions on our behalf. Oh that we could see ourselves as others see us.

Well, as a Brit, I can say that, having served Operation Mobilisaton Year Program - (http://www.om.org is well known as USA-founded & led) - I was very impressed with the many USA folk I worked with, inc Vance from California & John T from Indiana, who lived in the same 8-man team house all that time ('74/'75 in STL Bromley team, if any of you are out there!)

Thanks Ian. Yes I must agree with you there. I was involved with both a youth evangelism / discipleship group and Christian businessmens group and in the 80's visited the states on vacation and attended the world conferences for each while there. I was VERY impressed with the hospitality of all the folks I met and stayed with. I would rate them highly too. And this coming from a kiwi, who it seems are also generally well regarded by those stateside. So there ya go. :)
