Televangelists

We've touched on this on many topics here, but I feel it's time we really get into this. I for one feel that the vast majority of Televangelists are nothing more than money hungry frauds that wouldn't know Jesus if he showed up at their door. So many claim to many wondrous things like, healing, talking directly to GOD, prophesy and more. But have any of them been right? I give to you an example...

Pat Robertson said that God has told him that a terrorist attack on the United States would cause a "mass killing" late in 2007

"The Lord didn't say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that."

Many (if not all) claim that GOD will make you rich wealthy beyond your dreams IF you first send them money.

Did you know God wants you to be rich? ~Creflo A. Dollar

Now what does the bible say?

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves" (Mat. 7:15).

Jeremiah 14:14

14 Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.

Matthew 24:10-12
10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,

I really have a problem with these false prophets, they make it hard to witness to many people that think they represent Christianity. They are false prophets and we should steer clear of them and their teachings.

No doubt we should try to watch with open eyes, minds, and hearts. For just because someone speaks of the Lord does not make him/her necessarily OF the Lord. At the same time, we should also likely strive not to point fingers. Rather be certain to avoid false prophets and witness the best that we can. Prayer is something to be strongly encouraged in such times.

Do not really watch many televangelists...that is unless you consider Beth Moore one. Then....I really do not see her much on television. As I said before, we need to strongly base our understanding on prayer. For God can indeed enlighten us if we only ask. Otherwise, look to His word in comparison of that of those spoken by these who minister to us. The answers sometimes are all too clear there.

Just my thoughts. My appologies for any offense taken.

May God Bless You

Never really read or listened to Beth Moore, but I've heard good things from friends that feel the same way I do about Televangelists, so I think your in the clear. :lol

When I read that Creflo A. Dollar quote it reminded me of Matthew 19:24

Did you know God wants you to be rich? ~Creflo A. Dollar

"...I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. "

I personally can't stand the false prophets that are constantly appearing on television, the worst I've seen is the preaching on BET.
I'm not being racist in my accusation of BET, there are preachers of many races [including white] that appear on that channel, preachers that are constantly slandering the word of god, twisting it any way as to where they can make money off of it, preachers that constantly and routinely beg for money to support the church while wearing large diamonds on every finger and live wealthy lives, Preachers whom only teach lies that they've created in order to influence the unexpecting, Preachers who would rub the word of God in the dirt [as they do] if it meant they could make a quick buck or two by doing so.
They do more way more harm than they do good, if they do any good that is.

Knowledge becomes evil if the aim be not virtuous.

I agree, Bryce. Our society is "Laodicean" enough without encouragement. Could you imagine Jesus saying the greed filled things they say? I cannot.. and when you think of the message of Jesus compared to "the prosperity gospel", it is very ridiculous.

This is not to say that God doesn't bless and prosper us.. but this same God also takes away and tests our hearts to see where our treasure is. In the USA our blessings have become our curse in so many ways.

Good deal. :biglol

Been sort of leery of televangelists. So many out there focus on money, or things that I just cannot help but question. Not to say in the least that I am perfect. For I am indeed far from it.
As I said before, we really need to pray and look to God's word when listening or dealing with televangelists. The truth always has a way of coming out.

May God Bless You

I think it's a shame that a few bad apples on TV make people think they ALL are crooks. Which, by the way, is not the case at all.

I have no problem with TV evangelists asking for donations. They run non-profit companies and broadcast their shows without commercial so there is a need for some form of revenue generation. They key is, how do they use that money in their ministry. Are they spreading the gospel and sponsoring missionary trips, for example? Or are they staying in $1000 a night hotels and buying Bentleys and Rolls Royces?

I would not dismiss all TV evangelists like some people in this forum who are blindly painting with a broad brush. I think it's a shame some Christians stereotype other Christians and their TV ministry which in the end is stabbing your brothers and sisters in the back. I have watched many preachers (I get 9 religious stations on my satellite) and I would say it's about a 50/50 proposition. Either you have good sound doctrine taught by responsible ministries or you have the "prosperity gospel" telling you God will line your pockets or even teaching outright hearsay. This ratio is probably no different than churches in each of our communities anyways. 50% (or more) I wouldn't attend because I don't agree with overly legalistic theology on the far right or liberal theology on the far left.

Do a little research, stay grounded in God's word, and you will find out who is good and who to avoid. Don't just take the word of some people here and write them all off because there are some gems that you will miss. Being cynical like that is doing nothing but playing right into the devil's hand.

I know your talking to me please feel free to call me on it. There are a very small hand full preachers on TV that I do like, and feel are not just in it for the money, Perry Stone, Shawn McCraney, Doris Hanson.

It's unfortunate that when many people think of Christians, they think of corrupt televangelists from the 70's and 80's. As Armor of God said, a few bad apples have ruined it for many of us, both Christians and non-Christians.

But in the end, the means by which they broadcast their message shouldn't be the criteria by which we judge them.

Yeah, I can kind of see that many people that are church today. Just lukewarm and going through the motions and not having a real relationship with Jesus. But yeah I wouldn't be so quick to condemn all the tv evangelists either. Just ask God to help you discern before making rash judgements.
