Obviously you are to read his word but it is by his spirit that you gain understanding.

1Cr 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

Zec 4:6 Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.


Jhn 4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

Jhn 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

You draw closer to God and understanding by worship. His word is for faith.

Rom 10:17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God

Having the Holy Spirit oiling you so to speak is the foundation of a sound hermenuetic. It's the first thing I mention in the section of my book on how to interpret the Bible.
