THE BLASPHEMY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: What is it?

31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. 33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: qfor the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Mt. 12:31–37.

The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is NOT a speaking sin. It is a sin of existence.

Jesus said: "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things."
The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a HEART [life] sin. It's not a sin of the tongue.
This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. Mt 15:8.

In the Old Testament the "heart" was understood as the "whole being of a person." It did not refer to the proverbial "heart" that pumped blood. It meant the "life" of a person. (unless the word itself is used to define the heart organ.) But today when we see the word "heart" in the New Testament (Greek: "kardia") where we see this word it is sometimes mentioned in this fashion: "receive Jesus into your 'heart'" doesn't mean the organ, but the whole being of the person vis-a-vis the LIFE of a person. One more thing:

The departure of Jesus Christ and the Advent of the Holy Spirit meant something. The Ministry of the Holy Spirit TODAY post-cross is to APPLY the salvation bought by the Son to God's Elect throughout all TIME. The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the presence of a non-elect, non-Covenant person in the world. This person is unholy because Christ did not die for them, and they remain ALREADY condemned. It can't be changed. God is Immutable. His love is Immutable. His hate is Immutable. He loves His people He died for, and He hates the people He didn't choose to die for. Thus, the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is not a tongue sin, it is a heart/life sin.

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

And words come from the "heart/life."

Matthew 12:31 [NKJV] "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men."

Forgive me an old adage, but ...
  • Whenever you see a "THEREFORE" in scripture, you should go backwards and see what the "THEREFORE" IS THERE FOR.
I think you quoted in the wrong direction for understanding "blasphemy against the Holy Ghost".
Just my 2 cents (and worth every penny). 😉

Well let's look at it.

EVERY SIN AND BLASPHEMY of God's Elect was paid for on the cross, right?

Who does that leave?

The non-elect. Their sin was not paid for by Christ. This leaves them unatoned and an offense in the Presence of a Holy Spirit of God.

As I read it, YES.

Who does that leave?
I agree, the reprobate. ("unsaved" gets a little tricky with the whole time aspect of things and the verses about "before the foundation" ... so I prefer to just stick with those that finish life on the WIDE ROAD and sidestep "time paradoxes").

Where the issue comes in is Jesus making a distinction between sins that can/will be forgiven and sins that can/will NEVER be forgiven. The "WILL" part is easy ... the "CAN" part gets potentially tricky. I think the explanation might come BEFORE Matthew 12:31 rather than AFTER the verse.
(... but what do I know about such WEIGHTY matters.)

i am a little church (no great cathedral)
far from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities
-i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest,
i am not sorry when sun and rain make april
my life is the life of the reaper and the sower;
my prayers are prayers of earth's own clumsily striving
(finding and losing and laughing and crying) children
whose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladness
around me surges a miracle of unceasing
birth and glory and death and resurrection:
over my sleeping self float flaming symbols
of hope, and i wake to a perfect patience of mountains
i am a little church (far from the frantic
world with its rapture and anguish) at peace with nature
-i do not worry if longer nights grow longest;
i am not sorry when silence becomes singing
winter by spring, i lift my diminutive spire to
merciful Him Whose only now is forever:
standing erect in the deathless truth of His presence
(welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness)
