The Book of Daniel TV show.. You watch it?

What did you all think of that one?

A vicodin popping priest, a gay son, and a pot selling daughter....

At least it is a typical American family right?

I thought the show was done well and portrayed Christians in a humbler and more typical tone than the high and mighty "Seventh Heaven" genre.

Oh and Aiden Quinn talks to Jesus intemittently. That was pretty awesome too. Jesus looked pretty chilled out for the duration of the talks he has with Quinn....

The show focuses on an Episcopalian minister and father. He finds himself conversing with Jesus - his mentor and friend - who helps navigate family problems, church politics and even his nagging reliance on prescription painkillers.

The pilot was written on spec by "Titus" co-creator Jack Kenny. NBC took the rare step of buying his finished script even though it was not developed through the network's traditional process.

Kenny and his writing partner, Brian Hargrove, created and shepherded the Christopher Titus comedy "Titus," which ran from 2000-02 on Fox. Additionally, Kenny has directed episodes of "Titus," the WB Network's "Reba," and Titus' recent comedy special for Showtime, "Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding."

I was sorta ticked I didnt get the chance to see it yet. It looks like a good movie.

I neve really liked 7th heaven, because, although it did ocasionally deal with issues like this, they always acted in the "im so much better than someoen else" kind of way. I just got that vibe from the whoel family. How the dad never got angry, and how he always seemed to be near perfection. It just.. didnt fly.

Tv is just that, Tv. Its one thing when you watch a show that intentionally bashes one religion or something, But from what I have read, this does not bash at all.

(atleast not until they make one of the priest and little kid jokes)

.

How can you give praise to such a disgusting show?

I watched the last hour of it.

You can't even come close to comparing it with 7th Heaven or any other show that has had a so called "Christian" theme to it!

Most of the show ignored the fact that sin is a transgression that must come to terms with repentance. What it did was shake a fist at God in accepting the sins of everyone on the show as if sin was just of no consequences at all. It made a mockery out of sin as if it doesn't really matter how people behave, or how much drugs they sell or use, or how much they drink or have sex outside of marriage or fornicate with whomever they want.

It just totally depicts everyone in the show with some kind of sin as if it doesn't matter, and it's just the way people are and that even though there are church going people involved, they won't intervene in anyone elses decision to commit sin of their own variety.
And that when people go to the pastor for help he flubs up and gives too much personal information about his own affairs in the bedroom with his own wife as example for the couple being counseled, of whom by the way, are living together out of wedlock! And the pastor just shrugs it off as if it wasn't any of his business and kids them about it. :-? .

The only person they want to hide the sins from is pastor Daniel's Dad, the senior pastor. He is the strict right wing, fundamentalist type, that wouldn't be able to cope with a homosexual grandson. So they all try to hide everything from him.

There is also woman in the show who is a lesbian and she is an emotional wreck.

The whole show is about a bunch of neurotic people who don't know how to look to Jesus or don't know a thing about what repentance from sin means.

It displays a bunch of out of control people who have no sense of right or wrong in what they are doing to themselves. But they do bicker back and forth about each others sins, all the while not attempting to make any repentance from them. They just continue on living in their sins.

That whole show just mocks and degrades "Christianity". Doesn't matter what denomination they depict in the show, it is just an outright insult on Christianity. A sore example of what Christianity is really all about.

And as far as the role of the person who plays Jesus. :o They depict Jesus as mostly just observing what is happening and not saying much of anything. They depicted Jesus as being a bystander who just watches all the crazy people live life on the wild side. They make Jesus out to be ineffective in the lives of others! Sad, very very sad! :-?

Of course there was humor in it, humor attracts all types of people!
But the humor is just the tip of the iceberg.

It's a sorry excuse for entertainment. It's a sorry excuse for a show!

Its called honesty Relic......

We all struggle with sin and the way the main character handles it may not be "ideal" in everyones book but it is compassionate...

Instead of disowning his gay son he tries to understand where he is coming from and supports him.....

The fathers rage and hate at his gay som would not turn him straigh anyways.... It would just alienate him more....

America needs this kind of show to get the messageg across that Christians are no better than other folks, they are just saved..... There is no magic bullet that when you get baptised all your sin issues disapear into thin air.... This show demonstrates this...

My favorite part of the show was the humour portrayed by Jesus and the understanding in regards to the main characters opiate problem.... When the main character commnets on how hard life is Jesus says "I know".... Also it was interesting how the main character comments on how Jesus has t listen to all our problems but who listens to His?

peaceforall... You should watch it next Friday and let me know what you think..... It might show another side of Christianity that is not so abrasive....

fridays for me usually arent the best time to do anything :-P college student silly..

I will try though,.

Did I watch "That Show"

I have not posted in a long time but I could not resist this one. I agree with Relic all the way. This show was disgusting. I agree totally that not one christian on the show had enough umph! about them to call sin a sin and try and have a true relationship with our Lord Jesus, who can and does help us through all those types of situation.

Also God's name was used in vain twice!! By the Reverend Webster!!! What was that suppose to accomplish??? My pastor is not so holy he doesn't make mistakes but I guarantee he does not say ....... to anybody for any reason!!

Enough said!

Here is an email that I received concerning this show:

The Book of Daniel was aired by NBC on Friday night. Several NBC affiliates did not carry the program including those in Beaumont, TX; Tupelo, MS; Meridian, MS, Little Rock, AR; and Terre Haute, IN. In addition, NBC lost several million dollars when advertisers pulled out. NBC ended up selling the time for pennies on the dollar. The review below before sums up the emails we received by those who watched the program.

  • "I watched the Book of Daniel show on NBC tonight just so I could see if it was as bad as you said. Mr. Wildmon you have it wrong - it was worse than you described. The so called pastor takes drugs, smokes, drinks, takes the Lord's name in vain. He supports homosexuality and drug use. He broke the law by giving out prescription drugs to a Bishop. Two Bishops were committing adultery. They mis-quoted the Bible. The program portrayed our Savior in a joking way. There was a corrupt Catholic priest. The maid smokes pot. The Bishop drinks, the pastor's wife is a drunk and her sister is a lesbian and the son is a homosexual. One son sleeps around. I found this program very offensive to my Christian beliefs. They were poking fun at our Savior."
WBIR in Knoxville invited ministers in to see the program. Here are some of their comments.

Rev. Brian Kearns, minister of Lighthouse Christian Church:
  • "I think it's very demeaning to Christianity. If this is their view of Christianity, it's going to be as a joke. It's an assault on the Christian faith."
Rev. Tom Seay, pastor Bearden United Methodist Church:
  • "It's just a pretty sorry piece of work."
Dale Powers from the Catholic Diocese of Knoxville:
  • "You're portraying something as normal that is just absurd."
Rev. John Stuart (no church identified):
  • "Christ is at the center of my worship. What the show has done is demean my faith. You've diminished the person I worship...you've wounded me."
These comments are typical of those who watched the first episode. Since the tone and content of the show is now known, call your NBC affiliate and ask them not to carry any more episodes of the program. Very important: Ask your local advertisers to pull their adverting from your NBC affiliate if they continue to air the program.

I didn't watch it and don't know much about it's format. Is this going to be a one hour drama like say, 7th. Heaven or Joan of Arcadia... or is it a 1/2 hr. sitcom? Either way, I have issues with it from what Solo and Relic posted. If it is a sitcom, well that presents even more of a problem in the form of what is called a "laugh track". I doubt very much the writers and producers have the ______ (insert proper noun there) to control where the laugh track is inserted.

What, you say, that can't be done? Well this is where I applaud the creators of M.A.S.H. Watch the show carefully and notice there is NEVER a laugh track when they are in the Operating Room. This is on purpose... death is no laughing matter, especially during wartime. Many of the issues in this "show" are no laughing matter either. I hope this show dies a quick death. :sad

Soma, your response is so out there I don't know what to say. I will respond to this...

Honestly, the average TV watcher may be incapable of proper discernment and this could divide the issue between State and Faith even further apart. It reminds me of this quote from a popular movie:

Lewis Rothschild:
They don't have a choice! Bob Rumson is the only one doing the talking! People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.

President Andrew Shepherd:
Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference.

vic,

Christians have the same divorce rate as unbleievers do....

They sin in all the same ways and have all the same temptations.....

If you had a gay son would you disown him?

Thats really gonna solve his problem right? The main character of this series may not necessarily agree with the lifestyle but what is disowning your son going to do...... make him straight again.... lol....

I mean if Jesus disowned Us for our sins as is implied by Solo and others posts.... we would all be dammed for sure....

Watch the show before you judge it....[/quote]

A show like this has not been done before vic....

Obviously all the pharisaical shows like 7th heaven and other cardboard images of "True Christians" are not helping the image of the Church so......

Who really needs to be "reached out" to in the community anyways? The religious right who already sit in the pews or the far left that would not even consider going to Church......

This show reaches out to those that would never consider Christ in the first place....

Bah, you missed the whole point of my post. I don't need to watch the show to judge it; I know how people think. I was one of them at one time. This type of show will give people yet another reason to hate Christianity. Think what you want, this show has to go, IMO. The world wouldn't know the Truth if it slapped them square upside the back of it's head. :-?

Misery loves company, bro.

You will be condemned for not being born of God, born again. Your sin has already condemned you prior to salvation. When one is born again, he/she has a choice. Walk in the flesh and be destroyed physically, or walk in the Spirit and do great things for God.

You misunderstanding of the Word of God and my stand on the gospel of Jesus Christ, gives you no Godly right to say anything negative about my walk. That my friend is senseless.

Just so you know what I believe:

Jesus will never disown a born of God, born again believer! Jesus will deny one who believes that they are born of God, born again but are not. Jesus will tell such a one to depart from him because he NEVER knew them. When one is born of God, born again, Jesus KNOWS them, and will never tell them to depart.

The bottom line is that those who are born of God, and are born again will be known by Jesus Christ and will never be cast out of his presence. Those that think they are known by Jesus and continue to sin their silly hearts away, will be awakened rudely upon finding out that Jesus NEVER knew them.

Is this Grace or Works?

Even Paul continued to do sinful things against his own spirit....

All in all I am not gay and really dont see the need to argue... I thought the show was OK... not exactly Oscar material but I got something out of it.... That is all really

I agree with you Soma, it's by no means an Emmy quality TV show (Oscars are for movies), but it was a refreshing and entertaining look at real deeply flawed sinful Christians, much superior to shows like 7th Heaven. Instead of showing Christians living in this Brady Bunch world were sin is simple and something you can have solved by the end of an episode, this first episode immersed us in the life of this Reverend, a very screwed up and complicated (a little over the top) life, and shows him honestly trying to struggle with sin, to do the right thing, to follow God. It's only been one episode, so it's too early to know how they will proceed from this, but it has great potential. There's nothing that attacks Christianity in the show--portraying sinful Christians is truth, not attack.

Yep.... :)

The negative critics here on the boards surprisingly did not watch the first episode so I wonder why they are so flamboyant on being critical.......??????

You hit the nail on the head with the "Brady Bunch" typecast. It is refreshing to see another take on modern day Christians.

Yep.... That about sums it up.

With the exception of Relic, the people that are giving this series a thumb down didnt even watch it...

I never understood that. Why people condemn certain things without having any firsthand knowledge of the "particulate" involved.

Personally for me, I have screwed up a lot in my short lifespan of 25 years. I have done things that were stupid, inconsiderate, mean - spirited, etc. I am not proud of these events and sometimes with the whole "high and mighty" mentality of "Churchfolk" I just feel inadequate and wonder why I should even try.

This show made me happy because it shows that there are other people out their that struggle with problems that many consider to only be outside the believing community.

You are not alone... In whatever you struggle with. That is what the main point of this pilot episode was for me.....
