Bible Study The Book of Judges

The first book of Judges stands in utter contrast to Joshua. In Joshua an obedient people conquered the land through trust in the power of God. In Judges, however, a disobedient and idolatrous people are defeated time and time again because of their rebellion against God.

In seven distinct cycles of sin to salvation, Judges shows how Israel had set aside God's laws and in it's place substituted "that which was right in his own eyes". The recurring result of abandonment from God's laws is corruption from within and oppression from without.

During the nearly four centuries spanned by this book God raises up military champions to throw off the yoke of bondage and to restore the nation to pure worship. But, all to soon the sin cycle begins again as the nation spiritual temperature grows steadily colder.

I also now know that that's where the story of Samson and Delilah are listed.

The story of Samson and Delilah is a great teaching lesson as when we allow our self to fall prey to the enemy by being deceived it will be that of our own destruction. Samson realized what he had done was wrong keeping company with this harlot and causing his strength to be taken away from him, but with no thought of his own life pleaded with God that He would give him the strength to avenge the enemies of God as God did grant him the strength to pull the pillars down destroying the enemy.

Gideon, also named Jerubbaal and Jerubbesheth, was a military leader, judge and prophet whose calling and victory over the Midianites are recorded in Judges chapter 6-8.
