Friends, From the ACCS Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture.
I read:
"15:26-27 THE COMFORTER SENT FROM THE FATHER "But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to your from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning". (page 185).
"15:26b The Spirit of Truth Proceeds from the Father
"Creedal Statement. COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE 381:
"And [we believe] in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father (1), who with the Father and Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. NICENE-CONSTANTINOPOLITAN CREED, THIRD ARTICLE (GREEK TEXT). [page 186].
Notes. 1. Western Latin churches later added the word "filioque", which eventually brought about schism between Eastern and Western Christianity that continues today.
"THE SPIRIT PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER. DIDYMUS THE BLIND: He does not say, "From God" or "from the Almighty" but "from the Father", because though the Father and God Almighty are the same, yet the Spirit of truth properly proceeds from God as the Father, the Begetter ... The Father and the Son together send the Spirit of truth: HE comes by the will both of the Father and the Son. ON THE HOLY SPIRIT" [page 187.].
ANCIENT CHRISTIAN COMMENTARY ON SCRIPTURE. NEW TESTAMENT IVB JOHN 11-21. Edited by JOEL C. ELOWSKY. General Editor, Thomas C. Oden. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, Copyright 2007.
Father and Son together send the Spirit from the Father; the Spirit proceeds from the Father. Simple. Direct. Christ speaking (John 15:26). Christ breathing the Spirit is the sending of the Spirit from the Father, not the Spirit proceeding from the Son. Do not confuse the economy of the Spirit's temporal mission sent by the Son with the eternal hypostatic procession of the Spirit from the Father in eternity. In Erie PA Scott R. Harrington
