The dangers of Halloween

When I had young girls under my care, I several times got on radio phone-ins, this time of year, to point out the risks of kids going to the doors of strangers who may be pedophiles or drug pushers

Also of crossing roads on what is very often a foggy night, dressed in black

Many churches pray that the weather will be so bad that even the most foolhardy won't go 'trick or treating'

aka demanding money with menaces

Many churches instead have a Hallelujah Party, encouraging kids to dress in bright, cheerful colours, to shine the light of God's love, joy, peace & wisdom into this dark world :P :multi:

Trick-or-Tract this Halloween

AgapePress reports that Ray Comfort of Living Waters Ministries and "The Way of the Master" says for years he and his wife would not give out candy when trick-or-treaters came by on Halloween night -- that is, until he realized what a tremendous opportunity they were missing...

"When Halloween would come around," he recalls, "Sue and I would turn the light off, and we'd go to bed early; and when people knocked on the door, we'd hide. And I thought, 'This is horrible!'"

But one day, Comfort says he had an epiphany. "I thought, 'Hang on... people are knocking on my door -- strangers.' So we made up some packets with tracts in them and candy. And the first night we did this, we had over a hundred people come knocking on my door, and I gave them tracts."

On no other night of the year, the ministry founder points out, does he get a chance to share his faith with strangers who stop by his home like this. "And so I look forward to Halloween; it's my evangelistic highlight of the year, when people come door-knocking," Comfort says.

He adds that Living Waters Ministries offers at its website, http://www.livingwaters.com, a "Halloween pack" especially designed to help Christians reach the lost by using Halloween as a springboard.

Very creative one here from http://www.crosswalk.com:-

Trick-or-Treating with Purpose
Kim Wier
Editor's Note: This is a two-part series on redeeming Halloween. Click here for part 1.

You may think it is impossible for God to redeem Halloween in its present state, but that is all the better, for when He accomplishes it  He alone will receive the glory. We have discovered that in the case of Halloween, the truth really can set you free -- free to celebrate the power and goodness of God as you do so in the spirit of remembrance for which it was first established

One simple but meaningful way to begin redeeming the season is to embrace the fun of trick-or-treating by changing the focus. The early faith heroes died because they wanted others to have the opportunity to hear the life-giving message that Jesus is the Son of God. Begin planting seeds of eagerness to share the gospel in the hearts of your children through the fun of going door to door.

First, help them think of different kinds of people who need to hear about Jesus. Let them dress up like one of those groups of people. Children are so creative. They may dress like a sea creature as they remember how sailors need Jesus. It could be a ninja as they consider those on the Asian continent. Football players, cowboys and policemen need to hear the good news. Depending on your child’s age, you can make this a more significant event.

• Talk about how people who have not accepted Jesus have been "tricked" into believing they don’t need Him, but that God wants them to receive the greatest "treat," salvation through Jesus and eternal life in heaven.

• Make a list of some specific ways that your children could pray for that group of people to be prepared to hear the gospel. Include asking God to send workers into that harvest field.

• Each night for a week before or after Halloween, pray with your children for those people.

• Look together at Jesus’ commission given to us in Matthew 28:18-20. Explain to your children that we should go and make disciples everywhere in the world. Take some time to talk about how each of us can obey that command right now and in the future.

• On the night of Halloween, as you prepare to send your children out to trick-or-treat, be sure to go over safety rules and accompany them from house to house.

• It is always a good idea to remind them to say thank you at each place you visit. Have a great time enjoying a fun experience with your children that will result in spiritual training as well.

• After you arrive home and admire the abundance of candy, finish the night with a Scripture verse that promises sweet rewards for those who do God’s work on earth. " Itwill be good for that servant whom the master finds doing [good things] when he returns" (Luke 12:43). And, " How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Romans 10:15).

• Help your children see that while trick-or-treating can be a fun time one night a year, following God and sharing the good news of Jesus is an adventure that lasts a whole lifetime.

• Finish your trick-or-treat night with prayer as you tuck them into bed. Thank God that someone told you about Jesus, and ask Him to use your family to do the same for others.

God has not given us a spirit of fear. He has given us a sound mind and the gift of love. Halloween, originally a church holiday, should not have Christians running scared. Instead, we can celebrate without selling out when we "remember those who have gone before us" and follow in their footsteps.

Mr Versataile.... whats next?

Going to try to support rabbit killings near easter, since that is soem crazy occult idea? Going to attack cupid with a Bow and Arrow? Going to tell kids not to believe in santa anymore? Get rid of the tooth fairy?

I find your logo & post signature even more ironic than the jokes

Does 'promote free will' mean 'whatever turns you on/floats your boat'? :robot:

Pedos, serial killers & terrorists etc get 'turned on' by being extremely cruel indeed :-?

& pinko liberal wimps let 'em get away with it :x

That is NOT ability to 'get on' - it just lets da bad guys get on with evil plans & deeds undeterred & unhindered

The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey turns every single command of God upside down - encouraging all kinds of evil & persecuting the godly

"Woe to those who call good evil & evil good"

So..

what's next for you?

Repent & turn to saving faith?

Or be left behind to face the worst time on Earth..

then eternal, conscious torment in Hell?

Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth & the Life: no-one comes to the Father except thru Me"

Only the Prince of Peace can give the 'peace past understanding'

"There is no peace for the wicked"

Make the right choice & don't delay any more, dude!

I get flamed every single year, but I love Halloween. Maybe that's because I like scary movies (not gory though. I can't handle gory movies). I love to decorate my house up all spooky and just have fun with the kids. We usually attend a Fall Festival at a local church. My kids own probably close to 100 dress up play clothes and this is a chance for them to be able to pretend to be a fairy, cowgirl, pumpkin or pirate for a day in public.

I do agree with it not being safe to go door to door anymore. We don't go to homes that we don't know the people personally. The past couple years we only went to relatives or very close friends homes.

So go ahead and someone tell me that I'm less of a Christian for participating in decorating and allowing my kids to dress up. God knows my heart and I can find a way to glorify him even on Halloween (passing out Halloween themes tracts with candy and a Wendy's Frosty coupon).

I'll forgive you Nikki for wanting to dress up and have fun. :-D God forbid we should have fun. Tell your critics you'll give up your Halloweens when they give up their Christmas and you'll see how fast the tune changes.

I see only one danger in Halloween---- Elvira. Might cause some of us guys to stumble. Thank God she's getting older now and retiring soon. :-D

We do not celebrate Halloween. We did take my oldest son to a Church Fall Festival thing on that night in the year of 2000. My husband decided the following year that it was a mistake, and that the Spirit was teaching him, through the Word, to not redeem this celebration for God in any form.

Our neighbors thought it was so odd, and strange, that we did not celebrate Halloween. (They have been good friends for 8 years now) They plagued us with questions after that first Halloween we lived next door to them. They wondered how it was that we could opt out on a lot of the potential memory making, not to mention the photos opportunities that were so nice to view later. We tried to explain that we were actually creating memories in Christ, and that the specific day was not missed by our family at all. It was really our first encounter with these questions from strangers. (non-family) It struck me as odd that they were concerned about the memories, and the photo ops, and that we should somehow consider them more important than the conviction of our hearts before the Lord. How are those things more important, and more memorable, than my husband and I serving Christ in the deepest parts of us, and teaching that to our children? I am not bragging at all, because I know it is only by the grace of God that we do (did) these things. They are not believers, and do not understand the joy in our service to Him, and has never come to fully understand such things about our family...though they do call on us to pray for when they have a need sometimes, and they join us in our fun times on occasion still. Our families no longer live next door to one another, and they remind us from time to time how exciting it was to live next door to us. (We are crazy project people...always something new and strange, and something going wrong!) We are good friends still. We love them, and they love us, though they do not understand our strange habits...and not just Halloween. :D They visit our farm now, and have even been caught up in our strangeness here at times too. The ironic thing is I have countless pictures of their family, and ours, being together in various ways over the years. Beautiful memories, and more to come by the gace of God. I believe, Halloween was one of our first witnesses to them...this non-celebration, I mean. They asked us, and we were able to share the Gospel, and show our hearts before them in dedication to Christ, and not the world. We have had many more discussions since, and over other matters where we do not look like the world because of the Holy Spirit's leading, and God's merciful grace.

Five years ago (nearly), the Lord gave us a reason to rejoice (besides our daily rejoicing in Him) on October 31,...and for the protestants, it is not the Reformation...my daughter, Arianna Isabella, was born. The wife, and daughter, were at my home that day for the birth. What a memory, huh? She was two weeks late by our calendar, but right on time by God's. It was a blessing to our family the day she came to us...my husband thought her name was fitting given she was born on Halloween. Holy, and consecrated to God, is the meaning of those two names. It seems to me that God redeemed that day for us, rather than the other way around. I praise how wonderful He is!

The Lord bless all of you.

the history of holloween is as follows. it first started out as a satanic ritual in england many years ago. many people dressed up in costumes and danced around fires then went and asked people for food to give there gods a sacrifice. if the people stated that they had no food they would take a chid and sacrifice it for their god. they would then mark the house where they got the child with something in the shape of a jackolantern.

why would we as christians celebrat a holiday that give all glory to the works of our enemy. sure they give it a different name. but they do the same activities. so truly what is the difference?

as far as santa and the easter bunny. they are just as bad as halloween as they were made up by non believers to take glory away from the lord on his days of great glory.

Heh. This startling accurate portrayal would not be complete without mentioning Michael Myers and the Great Pumpkin. :)

The Jack-o'-lantern comes from a story about a farmer who made a deal with the devil never to be let into hell. Instead he wanders aout endlessly with a turnip with a candle in it.

If you want a better history of Halloween, check out Wikipedia. It also has a section on how Christiand deal with the holiday.

Overall, Halloween is what you make it to be just like every other holiday. So have fun with it if you can.

ummm..

I am confused.

was I the only person that went trick-or-treating with adult supervision?

we never went alone, and my parents NEVER let me have any candy until they had searched through it, taking out anything that might be opened or tampered with

(however, when you search haloween poisonings, there are very few, and those few tend to be perpetrated by family members.

Hi there,
I'm really sorry but you have the whole idea of holloween wrong, it's not about being evil or anything about that, I really don't know who has taught you but have you actually asked any of the wiccans or pagans about the history. We celebrate it as it's the end of the year and we're looking forward to the new one with wonder and expectation, where is the evil in that, christians have been doing it for years.

Have you ever blown candles out on a birthday cake in one go, have you ever thought when the idea came in, Guess what lol or do I have to tell you as it will be something which every living christian will have to repent of as it is part of the pagan path not wanting to get nagative energy around them, it can be verified lol. There are so many things which christians do and they don't realise what they are doing, it takes someone like us to let them in on it as we have a evil sense of humour lol, why should you have all the fun

By the way holloween (samhain) starts on the eve at dust and carries on til the next day, so many christians get this wrong but hey ho lol.

We also don't agree with kids going round demanding money, it's not what halloween is about, this is something which has come from abroad, like a lot of things but it's no use blaming halloween for this one.

I don't have problems with any christian I have spoken too or on here but when you are saying stuff which is completely wrong then I can't stand back and see this happen. I'm sure you will do this if I get it wrong if I misquote the bible and I really hope you do.
many blessings to you.

Satanism is completely different to witchcraft but you wouldn't know that would you lol.
Satanism is a very selfish path, they are into the negative side but the pagan belief is more into the nature based way of life. God made the earth so we follow what he says as well. thing is we only take what is necessary and not any more, we are mostly healers as well which is more on the positive side, we also want to see the good in everything and see healing when other people may give up.

Paranoia is rife and you can all thank the media for this. But anyway ...play it safe, folks, just in case. Stay home. Don't venture outside any more than you need to. Your neighbor is probably waiting to get you. Or, at the very least he's WATCHING you because he's probably a pervert. And don't forget for one moment that behind every bush there COULD lurk a pedophile waiting to grab YOUR kids specifically. Don't let them out of your sight. As an added precaution cut down all bushes in your immediate vicinity. Every man is a potential molester so eliminate potential hiding places. NEVER forget that. And, just because things have been quiet lately don't forget those terrorists who are plotting EVEN AS WE SPEAK to blow you all up ...Osama Bin Laden has his eye on YOU SPECIFICALLY. We all know this. Think "Red Alert" ALL the time! Attach a small Bible to your forehead and the foreheads of your kids. Don't allow them to become tainted with anything that is not contained within that book. Encourage the quoting of scripture for use in everyday language when dealing with issues of a secular nature. Disallow loose and idle chatter that may somehow indicate that your child has the capacity to exercise God-given reasoning skills of his/her own. MOST OF ALL do not encourage your kids to think for themselves, to make their own mistakes if necessary, or/and to exercise freedom of choice without first instilling into them your own perfect virtues. ABOVE ALL, stay home, lock the door (except for the trap-door in the floor), but DON'T turn out the lights. Avoid dark areas of the home. A man could be lurking in the house some place. Plan your escape should this ever occur. The trap-door in the floor is the trick. This leads to the tunnel from your home to the nearest 'safe house'. Did you first run a 'police-check' on the occupants of the 'safe-house'? Don't trust anyone.

DON'T TAKE CHANCES! UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES must you EVER allow your child to actually ...um ...live ...

Lovely in Missouri,
Amen what better way to spread the word.Having people see your life and ask questions.
I pray that more would stand up for the Lord.

God bless you.

Hi Ian,

Isn't it funny that your so quick to judge me, you don't even know me so how can you really say that I'm being deceived by the father of lies. Is this acually scriptual as I'm not certain it is.

It's funny that your having a go at my belief, even though I'm not attacking anything to do with the christian faith, it's really sad to see.

I thought the burning times were over centuries ago but it looks like it's still out there but hey ho, I can handle it lol.

Please can I say this just once as I don't follow, worship or even have the devil as a god. The devil is a fallen angel, period that's it. How can the devil have so much power as it's only christians give him this not us, so who's in the wrong. Your putting him the high places, not me. I just see the devil where he should be. He fell through being too big for his boots, it's his problem not mine. I just wish people would leave this one alone as I've never worshiped or even wated to glorify him in any way shape or form, accept it and move on, please as we really need some other stuff which you can say instead of old news like this.
