First, let me state that I'm an atheist.
Second, let me state that I agree with you here; moreover, I don't really think we should be having these debates at all.
I find myself wondering what the purpose is of these debates. Religion (or lack thereof) is something deeply ingrained in people, so the reason for the debate cannot be that the atheist wants to "convince" the christian (or vice versa). We can say the same of the audience - anyone firmly ingrained in their beliefs won't be swayed either way by a mere debate.
Maybe it's for the benefit of those who are somehow "undecided" about their religion. To them, I say that if strong rhetoric from a debator is all it takes to (de)convert you, you have bigger issues at hand than being undecided about religion. ;)
