The fact that Christians must "debate" Atheists at all is, itself, a strike against the Christian position. Those who not only believe in God but claim they have a relationship with Him shouldn't have to debate the issue, they should be able to demonstrate His existence in power. But all they can do is argue the point, like unbelievers.

BTW, I especially liked where it said that 92% of the people who heard this debate thought the Christian won. What people where those? 1500 churches and Christian organizations :roll:

This is a good point and I believe it speaks to the state of the church at least in N. America. While I will not argue the point in this present post, I will state my opinion that the church is basically indistinguishable from the rest of the world.

If the members of the church were really "victorious", we would stand as a shining beacon to the world. Is this happening. I submit that it is not.

Second, let me state that I agree with you here; moreover, I don't really think we should be having these debates at all.

I find myself wondering what the purpose is of these debates. Religion (or lack thereof) is something deeply ingrained in people, so the reason for the debate cannot be that the atheist wants to "convince" the christian (or vice versa). We can say the same of the audience - anyone firmly ingrained in their beliefs won't be swayed either way by a mere debate.

Maybe it's for the benefit of those who are somehow "undecided" about their religion. To them, I say that if strong rhetoric from a debator is all it takes to (de)convert you, you have bigger issues at hand than being undecided about religion. ;)
