The Holy Spirit

I'm curious about the holy spirit I ways seem to be hearing about it lately
I have a reasonable understanding of what it is. Part of the trinity , The father, the son, and the holy spirit

I think of it as divine substance in the air.

Anyhow I wonder how a person knows that it is within them.
I mean is it a gradual slow change or dose the holy spirit just one day take over as a over powerful feeling.? I kind of get suspicions of people that say the later.
Is it part of the make up of all Christians or for that matter everyone?. I mean perhaps its within everyone and we just have to draw it out?
I have prayed for god to fall me up with it many times but I don't feel any different.

The Holy Spirit is a Who not an It.

John 16
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

Jesus left and sent them the Holy Spirit. Our Helper a Him not an it.

I think the sign that the HS is dwelling within you is not a particular feeling but a change in your character. A sudden desire to repent from your sins.

Pentacostals may differ.

One thing to keep in mind about the Holy Spirit is how individually He works within each of us. We each will have our own testimony as to how He works, because each of us have different needs and areas of sin.

For me, I had a classic "conversion" experience, one night in my bedroom whilst reading through the Gospel of John. Then, about 3 years later, I had another experience, call it a "baptism of the Holy Spirit" if you will, in which I went from struggling and floundering in my faith to being far more grounded and on-fire.

That was me. My husband on the other hand, has no specific "come to Jesus" moment, not was there ever an infusing of the Holy Spirit so overwhelming that he can pin point where he was when it took place. This doesn't mean though that Steve isn't born-again or indwelled by the Spirit, he certainly is, but with him, it was much more the gradual change over time.

One thing I will state, even though I love all my Pentecostal and Charismatic brothers and sisters here, there is an error in the teaching that if one is "baptized by the Spirit" one WILL speak in tongues. I've come head to head with this before, and it really is error. I do believe that, while the gift of tongues as spoken of in Acts, had a specific purpose and probably isn't around much, there are still those who do speak in tongues for whatever reason that edifies them. And, if that if the gift they desired, very good! However, not all who are indwelled or baptized by the Spirit will speak in tongues. There are other gifts that the Spirit will manifest within the believers He baptizes and indwells.

Astounding!;) We agree. Seriously, you are %100 on with that post.

The Holy Spirit also represents a change in the relationship with the believer. Ever closer.

In the OT It was God Above Us

In the gospels, it was Jesus....God among us,

Now each believer has a relationship with God, through the Holy Spirit, God within us.

God with us....

I will never leave you nor forsake you... lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Do make the mistake of making this trivial...it is GOD With us. Absolutely wonderful, personal, intimate relationship with God.

your pretty right handy i couldn't agree more about what you said of speaking in tongues. The holy spirit enables us differently we don't need 2 billion clones on earth professing Christianity. We all each have a different spiritual journey, God has laid out a path for us all to follow. Because of this we are equipped different ways. The body of Christ has people with gifts that compliment each other to work together.

I think one thing most agree on is the holy spirit coming on you is a joyous occasion, usually accompanied with feelings of peace love and happiness.

Sometimes too things happen you cant control the spirit does to individuals. Those with faith that open themselves up to it can be used to do the miracles and stuff if it is gods will for their lives.

One thing I do know when the holy spirit comes on a believer a desire to share the gospel and serve others often manifests in them. Usually because its so awesome they want to share it with their friends.

Repent of your sin open your heart- ask Jesus for it- receive it, as many times as you want. Its the gift from God for being a follower of of Christ. the HS changes and empowers lives. but most of all believe it can and it will. For me it is an inner glow feeling.

Usually people filled with the holy spirit have this mark on them it comes out from them. It is how you can tell..

1 Corinthians 13

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails.

2 prayers

"Lord take revenge on that person that wronged me today, can I have a new car and next weeks lottery results. oh and let the holy spirit fill me, so I can be happy in my new wealth." You probably get nothing because you ask with wrong motives. God wont honor that. (That prayer means Lord please send me trials and tribulations so I can learn to pray with right motives)

"Lord help me to love others as you do, and help me to be more like you. Please give me a passion to reach out to the unsaved and love the unloved, fill me with your holy spirit to do it'.. Lord do whatever you want with me, I'll do it. You got it! you will get as much holy spirit as you want plus some.

I agree, NO TRIVAL MATTER! And there is a lot of 'fatal' confussion on this subject.
It is not a done deal, but just the [REQUIRED] start of Sanctification. Rom. 8:1 + Rom. 8:14.

Here in 1 Sam. 10 we see how King Saul started out JUSTIFIED & then ended up in Chapter 16:14 with having the Holy Ghost Grieved away in the REQUIRED Sanctification process.

1Sam.10
[1] Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
....

[6] And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
....

[9] And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

Let's not forget:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. -Galatians 5: 22-23

I'm one of the later people Casper. I was on fire and could not think about anything but God. I couldn't separate from my Bible.

The best way to understand what the Holy Spirit is, is to go to the Bible and read examples of the Holy Spirit. So from what I have read in the Bible the Holy Spirit is God in action.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

Genesis 1:2 (ASV)
2 And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
<O:p</O:p
Numbers 24:2 (ASV) 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him.
<O:p</O:p
Luke 3:22 (ASV)
22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
<O:p</O:p
Acts 2:4 (ASV)
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. <O:p</O:p

Yer God in action sounds a nice way to discribe it. I dont buy into all this trinity stuff.

Which one of the three or two out of the three or even all three that you don't believe in?<O:p</O:p
The holy spirit being part of a so called trinity. Jesus and god had a divine realionship. I cant remember jesus ever speaking about the holy spirit like a divine person, I,m sure he didnt

Because the Holy Spirit is God when He is doing something. To really understand what the trinity is, you would have to forget about what you were told and go to the Bible and let God's word speak to you. I did that some years ago and like magic the trinity being a mystery vanished....the trinity is not a mystory, it is how it is explained that make it seem that way.
