The Message - Eugene Peterson (is it deception)

I purchased "The message" a while ago but have since given it away to someone with a warning that the book should not be considered a translation and should be read with caution. The reason is that it leaves the scripture open to all sorts of interpretation that can lead to deception. Take the Lords Prayer for example:

Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are.
Set the world right; Do what's best-- as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You're in charge! You can do anything you want! You're ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes.

Matthew 6 vs 9 - 13 (The message)

This to me is a mockery of the Lords prayer.

It isn't really deception; though it isn't a translation either. It is a modern day paraphrase and should never be used by students of the Bible.

I agree. Any serious Bible student who claims to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind should always strive to read the Bible in the original Hebrew and Greek as best they can. These days, even that can be a slippery slope, because the new concordances and lexicons are also being watered down and tampered with. If a language study is too much to ask, at least pick up an "older" Strong’s Concordance, an "older" Smith’s Bible dictionary, and some form of legitimate lexicon or interlinear work. I recommend the complete "Green's Interlinear Bible". Without going back to the original languages, there is "danger Will Robinson". Many false teachings that exist today are due to poor translations of the manuscripts and newer Bibles. Some of the "newer" ancient manuscripts are even questionable (I'll go into detail about this if someone wishes me to). If none of this is an option because there is just too much on your plate at the moment, I would at least stick with the "older" King James version. It’s not perfect, but it truly is the most accurate translation the English reader has available to him/her. Steer clear of recent "politically correct" translations and paraphrased Bibles, especially if you are not well-versed enough to spot the errors immediately. Remember; what did Satan use to tempt Jesus Christ? He used "Scripture"; however he "twisted the words" ever so subtly. These newer translations do the same.......hint, hint.

I don't have a knack for comprehending more than one language, so anything more than a rudimentary word study is too much. I also have a distaste for the (older) new stuff. I'm more inclined to use something with it's roots in the Byzantine/TR texts.
