As interesting as this sounds, and the possibility for developers is pretty good, the idea that saying they are skipping a version name in order to identify they are "breaking away from the past" is literally like saying they are developing a completely new operating system but it will be just like the last two.

Wrap your head around that one.

Windows Vista was version 6.0, Windows 7 is version 6.1. In other words, Windows 7 is really nothing more than a service pack for Vista. It should have been provided free of charge to fix all the bugs in Vista, but they made people pay full price for it. Windows 8 is version 6.2, or in other words, just a facelift for Windows 7. Windows 10 will most likely be version 6.3. Of course, if Micro$oft admitted this up front, nobody would buy their products, so they have to make it look like people are actually getting something new, even when they aren't.

TOG, are you sure about the difference between Vista and 7? Because, even though they look similar 7 was much better, and more stable than, Vista.

I guess they can call any version of their OS whatever they want, and people will buy it. I just hope 10 does not inherit the bad parts of 7 & 8.

I tried it myself. If you open a command prompt in Win7 and type "ver" (without the quotes) then it returns the version number 6.1. Also, if you right-click on the computer and select "Properties", it should also give you the version number somewhere on the list, and it will be 6.1. I haven't tried it for Windows 8, since I don't have a computer with Win8 on it, but I've been told it's 6.2 there. Some people who know more about the technical aspects have told me that Windows Vista, 7 and 8 all use the same kernel.
