A very important truth concerning Spirit Baptism is that it totally unique to the church age which is the Dispensation of Grace. It is something the Holy Spirit never did in the Old Testament nor in the gospels and will not do after the Rapture of the church. The ministry began in Acts 2 at the birth of the church. This is clear by comparing the following four scriptures:
In Colossians 1:18 it teaches that the church is the body of Christ: " And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence.
The second passage is 1 Corinthians 12:13 which teaches that entrance into the body is by means of Spirit Baptism:
Even by one Spirit were we all baptised into one body etc - all believers.
The Third passage is Acts 1:5 which teaches Spirit baptism was still future. Each of the gospels spoke of a future when Jesus would baptize all the saints but in Acts Jesus now predicts that this ministry would soon begin:
For John( the Baptist) indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
The fourth passage is in Acts 11:15-17. Prior to Acts 11 The church comprised Jews and prosecuted only but now the ministry of Spirit Baptism began for the Gentiles:
And as I (Peter) began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them ( Gentiles) as on us ( Jews) at the beginning. And I remembered the WORD of the LORD, how He said, John.indeed baptised with water; but he shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. If God then gave unto them the like gift as He did also unto us, having believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God.
Here Peter quotes Acts 1:5 that teaches that Spirit Baptism began at Pentecost in Acts 2.
So the church is the body of Christ- note this the church is never a building, never a denomination in the Bible.Entrance into the body is only by means of Spirit Baptism. As of Acts, 2 Spirit Baptism was still future. According to Acts, 11 Spirit Baptism began in Acts 2 at Pentecost so obviously, that is when the church began. It is a ministry that the Holy Spirit only performs in the church age. Once the church is complete and raptured the ministry ceases. As seen in Acts 11 today one of the things that happened to us when we believed is that we were baptized by the Holy Spirit into the Lord' s body.We are temples of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20. So, in essence, each individual that believes today is a temple of God, not a building. Some of the most appallingly religious sayings are blasphemous ie when people with an outward form of religion that a building is a sacred place! Essential to understand this doctrine.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurred twice, in Acts 2 and at the house of Cornelius in Acts 10 and 11. It has not occurred since and will not. Its purpose has been served.

Couldn't be further from the truth.

The purpose of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, is to give the believer power to witness, and minster: To cast out devils, and heal the sick.

To demonstrate that Jesus Christ is alive and raised from the dead, as His Spirit works through those who believe.

People since the Day of Pentecost have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, and spoke in tongues, and still do today, for God is still pouring out His Spirit on all flesh, even today.

And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all. Acts 19:1-7

Hi JLB
No one has received the baptism of the Holy Spirit since Cornelius, not even you.
God bless, Billy

How do you suppose that the Spirit dwells in us or are you of the denomination that doesn't believe that the Spirit dwells in the believer?

If you won't accept that as "baptism of the Holy Spirit, will you accept 1 Corinthians 12:13, " For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jew or Gentile, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit."

I reject your unbiblical opinion.

And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Notice the BIG difference. Paul LAID HANDS on them. Not the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

This is a hot topic guys i already see some snarks trying to grow...step lightly or i will close thread... be polite to your brothers ans sisters even when we have differing views...

Luk 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
Luk 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
Luk 6:33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

hello billybalke, dirtfarmer here

So, you accept that the way we have an entrance into the body of Christ is by Spirit baptism according to 1 Corinthians 12:13?

Notice the BIG difference. Paul LAID HANDS on them. Not the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Acts 1:4-5

33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. Acts 2:33

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father.

  • and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.
  • but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;

The promise of the Holy Spirit is for all who repent and believe, not just those on the Day of Pentecost or Cornelius, but all.

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

  • For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.

That is a C of C doctrine. Therefore you will not receive it if you don't believe it. Therefore, you are none of His. (Romans Chapter 8:1-39) Not only is it in Scripture, but the born again believer has the proof by it's regenerated manifestation, guidance and substance. Being religious is not salvation

You will have to do better than just keep posting your opinion.

I note that you did not answer what I said about your use of Acts 19:1-7

I am a member of the church of Christ. It is not a church of Christ doctrine. The Lord's church does NOT produce, invent or make doctrine but rather the church IS THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF THE TRUTH, I Timothy 3:15.

the church IS THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF THE TRUTH, I Timothy 3:15.
Yes, that Scripture is true, as are all Scriptures. I received the Spirit, so your interpretation is wrong. I have witnessed many miracles by the Spirit, those that were not within my power. You are missing personal fellowship and the supernatural power of the Spirit. You scoff at this, but I have witnessed it with awe. In some instances the Holy Spirit took over and reacted without any pre - thought or decision on my part, to my astonishment.

Thank you for your reply Doug. I don't know what you received but the church still is the pillar of the truth. May I ask what church you belong to?
Be blessed, Billy

Why would you assume the Baptism of the Holy Spirit isn't for all, whether through the laying on of hands or not?
