The New Sportscar
A man gives his son and new daughter-in-law a new sportscar for a wedding present, thinking they will have enjoyable rides together in the countryside. He will pay the insurance and upkeep for it, so it will not cost the couple anything.
The son and his wife park it in the back yard and never drive it. First the tires go flat and are ruined from sitting. Then mice get inside and eat the leather and make nests inside the interior. Then the brake fluid absorbs water and the entire braking system is ruined by rust. Then the coolant loses its anticorrosion properties and the cooling system is ruined. The sun burns the paint and it is ruined also. After 15-20 years the car is only fit to be towed to the junkyard to be crushed.
The father asks the son why they never drove the car, to which he responds, “My wife and I feel the Bible tells us to mortify the flesh. It tells us we are to rejoice only in Christ, and He is to be our sole source of comfort and happiness. Thus any kind of pleasure or happiness outside of Christ is worldliness and sinful. Driving that car would have been enjoyable to us, and thus it would have been sinful. So it just sat in the back yard until it rotted away.â€<o:p></o
How would the father feel in this story? Was the couple’s behavior respectful to him regarding his gift?
