The Old Beliefs

What did you learn in the church you grew up in?
What do you believe today that is different?
Why?

I grew up in the CC.
I was taught that almost everyone goes through purgatory to cleanse us of our sins.

Jesus paid for our sins and we are washed in His blood. I find purgatory nowhere in the bible.

I changed my mind because of studying the bible.

I did not grow up in church.... When I was 14... my mother fell in love with a priest...and she decided to return to Catholicism.... so this is the church I was introduced to as a teenager.

My mother passed away in 2007... and two days after her funeral.... I made an appointment with the priest who resided over her funeral and told him I wanted his blessing to leave the church. He was gracious enough to bless me... but in reality... it meant nothing.

Leaving Catholicism was the beginning of me finding FREEDOM... PEACE and JOY.

Sadly... by the time I left the church... I had been so beaten up by other Christians that I went missing in action for several years.... I just sort of collapsed and went on numb mode. The Christians that hurt me most were the ones who knew the bible best. Strange how that works sometimes.

Today... I am so IN LOVE with JESUS... and I can't really understand why it was that God had mercy on me... and revealed Himself to me personally.... but I remain so very grateful that HE did.

This is all new to me... this JOY I keep speaking of and SHOUTING about.... It has washed over me... and it has changed EVERYTHING.

Purgatory is one example for me as well.

Another is that I learned and later found correction in the Catholic tradition was that prayer was a form of punishment. I actually like the concept of confession as defined by the Catholic church except for one thing. The idea of using prayer as a means of penance. I remember leaving the confessional with instructions to repeat "x Hail Mary's" and "y Our Father's". The word "penance" means self punishment.

Additionally, using prewritten prayers is hardly what I consider to be from the heart honesty and repeating them over and over is in direct violation of Jesus' instructions to not use vain repetitions when we pray (Matthew 6:7). The word "vain" in this context means worthless, pointless, or without value. In other words to just speak the words.

I grew up in the Baptist Church with their beliefs as a child, until I was a teenager I begin with the Methodist Church until I was an adult until I tried to understand what was the meaning of when Jesus said to take my yoke upon you and learn of me.

Then, afterward I kind of understood what He was saying, of course some of things that I learned in those Churches, the words of Jesus to me had to be rightly divided unto Him for my salvation, especially about His commandments.

Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding

Love, Walter

I always learning and changing. I like freedom of belief and opinion as i can make my own decisions and im not forced to accept someone elses belief or opinion or face a penalty. Accurally i dont think i can say that anymore because i am forced to accept other peoples beliefs or face a penalty. Thats just the way self righteous rulers work.

Maybe not with Church leaders as im free to come and go they just share there beliefs and i have a choice to accept it or walk away, they dont force me to accept it and stay at there church under there opinions and belief, well not at the moment you ask what i believe today is different , i dont know, im banned from even going to church or face a penalty. I guess thats
dfferent.

How to worship God and read the bible and understand it . The power of the Holy Spirit . Patience and how to interact with other Christians even if you did not agree .
What do you believe today that is different?
People are different but God has not changed .
Hebrews 13: 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.
