Bible Study The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Some suggestions, which should give a better understand of this parable:

  • all ten virgins are Christians
  • this takes place right before Christ returns
  • lamps = minds
  • oil = truth
  • 5 of the Christians have enough truth to make it to the end
  • 5 of the Christians do not have enough truth to make it to the end
  • only those who take the mark of the beast can buy or sell, therefore,
  • impossible for the five foolish virgins to buy any truth.
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
Matthew 25:1-13
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

What you are saying is; only the virgins who had the mark of the beast could buy truth and make it to the end. I don't think you meant to say that did you?

Sorry if you misunderstood my words. You cannot buy God’s truth, nor can you buy His salvation. That’s why Christ told the five foolish virgins:

Matthew 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

The parable is about those who are ready and faithful. Not a whole lot to read into it. It has nothing to do with any Mark, or some believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues and others were not, so they did not make it in. Nothing to do with those things.

It's about serving God, doing His will, not thinking of tomorrow, but every day a day to be refreshed and serve with full heart, staying ready at all times. Not being slack, not letting things slide, but having your things ready to serve the Lord.

Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
(Mat 24:45-47)

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

It also says hurt not the oil or wine (sign of prosperity in Rev 6) I see what your trying to connect, but many have tried to take that parable and make it say tons of things, even making cases that if you don't speak in tongues, you can't be saved.

However, it's not about taking a mark so you can buy or trade. It was about being prepared for what was to come.

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
(Mat 25:1-3)

5 of them had to have bought oil at the announcement of the bride groom coming. It's no surprise that He is coming, just 5 of them did not bother to get any oil. It shows their lack of diligence in preparing for what was announced ahead of time.

The Mark of the Beast will be some type of system that allows someone to buy or trade. They need a mark, or they need to know his name, or they need the number of his name. One of these 3 things are needed as economic times must be tough after the horse riders destroy almost all the prosperity in the land.

The mark is where? In your forehead. What's in your forehead? Your mind, of course. "type of system", if you wish to call it that, is deception. How much of the world will be deceived by the false one before Christ returns?

In order to understand any/all parables Jesus provided a specific format. It's located in Mark.

Mark 4:
13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?

In this dissection Jesus provided 3 components to the parable. They are 3 fold.

Gods Words
Mankind
Satan

These 3 components exist in every parable/allegory/similitude/metaphor. If any of the 3 are missing, the understanding will be skewered/false.

And, as one might guess, the missing culprit is always apparent in every false/skewered dissection. I see no mention of the bad actor in any of the above dissections.

Hi, The virgins were not all believers because The Christ did not know 5 of them. The oil is the word of God that gives wisdom and truth and a path for them to walk to those who believe. (Psalms 119: 105a Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path ) But the other 5 were (Matt. 13: 19-22 ) They immediately received the word with joy and it was sown in their hearts, but they never went any further with the Truth and their lamps went out, for the world choked the word in them and their was no oil for their lamps and thus, no light for their path. (Christ said, "I,am THE WAY, THE TRUTH and THE LIGHT.)

There are two types of Christians, if you will. Those who stay in the milk of the Word, and those who move into the meat of the Word. Or, you could say, those who get the former rain, and those who also get the latter rain. Without the latter rain, the crop blasts in the field.

Both types are still Christians. The five, foolish Christians did not have enough oil (truth) in their minds to make it to the end.

They way I understand the parable has the bride of the bridegroom being the church, so none of the ten virgins are Christian, rather they are supposed friends of the bridegroom.

Jhn 3:28 - Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
Jhn 3:29 - He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
Jhn 3:30 - He must increase, but I must decrease.

The difference between wise friends and foolish friends is if they have John's baptism to light their way, or have returned to the moneychangers for guidance. I suspect there is Hanukkah symbolism involved.

Matthew 7:22-23
22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works.
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.

Matthew 25:11-12
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Without the latter rain, the crop blasts in the field.

Joel 2:23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

Zechariah 10:1 Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

Hi Douglas
Hope you are having a great evening.
I disagree, sorry, :sorry
In Matt.25:1
It states they went forth to meet the bridegroom.
Thus, I believe they all were Christians, the 5 foolish went to the wrong wedding,
They were deceived by Satan, pretending to be Christ, as 2These.2:4 sitting in the temple of God, claiming to be God.
Then when the true Christ comes, they will be so ashamed, wish the rocks would fall on them, they have become a Harlot, unfaithful to Christ, no longer a virgin bride, spiritually speaking.

Decent response!

keep it simple 5 wise 5 foolish 5 had lamps ready extra oil 5 foolish slept was not prepared thought they could get some oil from the 5 wise who was truly ready. if we are not prepared like the 5 wise. imo that represent no salvation. personally i can,t agree all 10 Christians

Not everyone is meant to understand the parables. Nothing new under the sun because most Christians don’t understand them. As proof look at the divergent answers here.

Matthew 13:10-16
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

Isaiah 6:9-10
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
