Who was Jabez?
יַעְבֵּץ ya‛bêts yah-bates'
Jabez is only mentioned 3 times in the Old Testament. The first time we see Jabez describes a town or city
1 Chronicles 2:55 "And the clans of scribes who lived at Jabez..." Jabez was located in Judah near the city of Bethlehem. (also known as Palestine)The man person Jabez is described in 1 Chronicles 4:9 as being an honorable man even more so than his brothers.
Jabez means to grieve or sorrow. It is uncertain what caused so much sorrow of the mother of Jabez we may assume his birth was extremely painful compared to Jabez's brothers or it could be a sorrowful event that the mother was going through at the time of Jabez's birth. in biblical times given names were very important so much so that the name would represent what that person would become or even their nature therefore we might assume the mother of Jabez was making a prediction of his nature or personality
1Ch 4:9 And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
Jabez was an honorable man because of his relationship with God. His relationship with God must have been exceptionally noteworthy to cause the author of Chronicles to stop The record of genealogy in order to explain to us these details about Jabez and his extraordinary personal relationship With God.
Despite his namesake, Jabez refused to be a reflection of the meaning of his given name to become a man of great faith in God and His sovereignty in the lives of his people who seek to know Him intimately.
God had a purpose for Jabez. This righteous man wanted God's blessing to be fulfilled.
The Prayer of Jabez reveals that Jabez understood there is only one God and He should be the center of our every day lives. God wants to bless every persons life. But, we must first decide to invite God into our life and ask for His blessings. Jabez desire was to succeed and increase his influence in others lives for God that He would be glorified. It is important is that when we want to reach for goals and accomplishments that we have God on our side. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." It is so important that we understand and practice this in a close personal relationship with God. it is equally important to stay close to God and trust in His continual faithfulness and His guidance throughout our life. It is evident Jabez knows and prays specifically to the One who can protect him from evil and pain being none other than Almighty God our creator.
At the end of the verse it is clear that God was pleased with this faithful prayer by granting what Jabez asked for. It is also important to see that Jabez was passionate in his plea to God: "He cried out to the God of Israel."Oh that thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
God wants to hear that we need His sovereignty in our lives through passionate prayer.
Do you want God's plan for your life? He has a distinct purpose for us. God desires us be a positive influence in the lives of the people we are trying to reach out to for the lord Jesus Christ. Why not pray that God will bless you indeed!
1 Chronicles 4:10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested
