There once was a man ordinary and plain that wondered about sharing. What he shared wasn't money or goods; for he had none. No, what he shared was a message that burned in his heart like a fire that wouldn't go out.
This man lived in a town ordinary and plain; in that town this man would walk up and down a certain street sharing. The people of this town paid no attention to this man for he was too familiar. Everybody knew of him for he was a common sight.
There was a certain place in this town that everybody gathered; its insides were smoky and smelly yet nobody seemed to care; it too was very familiar. The people talked about this certain man that always walked and always shared; yet the talk amounted nothing. The people just talked and talked.
One day this certain man entered this certain place and stood in the center of the room. The man was ordinary and plain; he began to share:
Jesus said: "I am the gate. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture." [John 10:9]
I say to all of you: 'Notice Jesus said, 'I am the gate.'' A gate is like a doorway; it is something you go in and out of. The sheep of Jesus' fold need to go in and out of this gate daily to find food. It is food that the world cannot provide; the food is faith building and always shares. It shares because it cannot stop sharing; it burns like a fire that cannot be quenched.
The Bible says: "Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, have something to eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about." So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one has brought him anything to eat, has he?" Jesus told them, "My food is doing the will of the one who sent me and completing his work." [John 4:31-34]
You people of this ordinary town in this certain ordinary place remain here; you never leave this place. You are skeletons; nothing more than white washed bones walking about. You never go out through the Gate to find pasture; you are too selfish to do so. Your minds are consumed by social stature and status; the status of this smokey and smelly room. Jesus is not your Gate; He is only your status.
Repent, and kindle the fire that has gone out. Let this fire consume you; let the love of God fill you. You cannot say you have God's love if you have no fire in your heart. Without love you are nothing; just skeletons walking.
This certain man left the room and returned to the streets of this ordinary town. He walked up and down sharing...on a certain street called "Is Anybody Listening?"
Then he said to them, "As you go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who doesn't believe will be condemned. "These are the signs that will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands; even if they drink any deadly poison it will not hurt them; and they will place their hands on the sick, and they will recover." So the Lord Jesus, after talking with them, was taken up to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. [Mark 16:15-19]
