Acts 5:3, 4: But Peter said, Ananias, why has satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep part of the price of land for yourself? while it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.
Sin is wrongdoing. Sin is the failure to do the right thing. Sin is a cancer and deceptive. And sin is insdanity. By that I mean that you're insane to think you can sin and get away with it. The Bible says, Be sure your sin will not find you out ( Num. 32:23). You may try to hide sin as Achan did in his tent, but God sees and isn't fooled by it ( Josh. 7:1). Ananias and Sapphira actually allowed Satan to twist their thoughts beyond what was already wrong ( Acts 5:1-11).
Jesus told the story of the prodigal son ( Luke 15:11-32). The boy rebelled against his father, took his inheritance, and left home. After waisting his possessions with prodigal living, he ended up in a pigpen feeding swine and living off the pods that the swine ate. It's hard to imagine a Jewish person in a lower place than he was. Jesus makes this astonishing statement about the young man at that point: But when he came to himself.... ( v.17). Obviously, if he was himself, he couldn't come to himself. So he was not himself. He was outside himself. If he was outside himself, he was beside himself. If he was beside himself, he was insane. Until that moment, sin had so twisted his thinking that he was not thinking straight.
Moral insanity is the only logical explanation for Amerca's behavior the past thirty years. To murder millions of unborn children under the auspices of pro-choice is insanity, both morally and scientifically. To call homosexuality an acceptable secondary lifestyle, when God calls it an abomination, is insanity ( Lev. 18:22). To not allow kids to pray in school is insanity. But that is where sin leads, It will twist your mind.
