The psychology of choosing good over evil

It can be as small as denying oneself an extra piece of chocolate cake. We choose good for various reasons;
-We have a long term goal. To lose weight or live more healthy.
-We want to be reminded of those who are hungry in the world and dont have enough to eat.
-We are reminded that gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins
-We fear getting diabetes
-Not taking another piece will mean another member of the family has more
-It feels selfish. It feels bad. It feels weak. It feels sinful

What goes through our mind as we sin?
Ok we can rationalise gossiping about another family member;
-I can share some "juicy" news that can elevate me as the knower and diminish the family member I don't especially like
-im bored. This sin really focusses me , I feel the adrenaline rush.
- I get a rest from my self bully.
-i might get a "wow" response from the person I am telling. "I didn't know that!"

True, true! That is the true meaning of gossip. We like talking about other people but get upset if we find out they are talking about us behind our backs. We enjoy laughing at people's mistakes but hate it when someone stifles a giggle at ours. We like talking about ourselves, but when someone beats us to it, we respond by calling that person full of themselves.
