Paul teaches.....

  • 11 Timothy 2:16-18 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymeanaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.

2:19-20 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

2:23-26 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive: but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at His will.

WOW. :o What did Paul just teach?

In God's great house, among those that love God and "nameth the name of Christ," or are Christian....we will find souls of gold and silver as well as...those of wood and earth. Why? Because the wood and earth dishonour God's house. They have fallen into "the snare of the devil." They love Christ but have been taken captive by the deceiver! To become vessels of honour they must purge themselves to become "meet for the Master's use," and again be used for "every good work."

These vessels of wood and earth are God's and "the Lord knoweth them," but nevertheless they are to "depart from iniquity" and then they will be vessels of gold and silver. What is the iniquity in this lesson? What is the dishonour brought upon God's great house? Paul tells us....

  • 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.

So, we pray that God will give all of us "repentance to the acknowledging of the truth," for it is His to give. But, in order to receive it will we purge ourselves by acknowledging truth? There are many truths we must acknowledge but here it is one truth in question and it concerns those that say "the resurrection is past already."

I meant to add....

In Paul's epistle he named "Hymenaeus," as one of those that had been snared by the devil and was teaching that the resurrection had past. He was mentioned in one other place....

  • 1 Timothy 1:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

So, Hymeanaeus was a blasphemer as well as false teacher. The other of the offenders teaching incorrectly about the resurrection was "Philetus" but there is no other mention of him.

Paul was in chains/bonds because of his teaching on the resurrection.

2 Tim 2:7-9
7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. KJV

Simlar to 1 Tim 1:20 with a little different twist...

  • 1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh,
that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
    KJV

I think the head of the nail has been struck,,I looked up the names and,,,

II Timothy 2:17 "And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;"

The word used for "canker" in the Greek is "gangraina",,,,,,,and if we take it a step further and carry it over into English the word would be "gangrene".

We all no what you do with gangrene right????? ,,cut it off,

for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

"Hymenaeus" means "belonging to marriage".,,,, :confused :chin I get it.....

That's true Joe but those that put Paul in chains weren't in the body. In Paul's teaching about those that say the resurrection has already happened...they were in the Lord's house, they were of the body of Christ. They loved the Lord and yet had been taken in the snare of the devil...teaching the resurrection was past. Teaching the second Advent had already happened.

Yes. Even though there is a different twist the point being made is the same. When one in the body teaches incorrectly it can harm the rest of the body. Paul continues your above quote with....

  • 5:6-7 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

The same word...purge is used in both lessons. There Paul tells the body to purge itself but in Timothy he tells a body to purge itself...."If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour."

  • Hebrews 9:13-14
13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,
sanctifieth to the purifying [purging] of the flesh:
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? KJV

In the gospel era of today we don't do the animal thing...for the elect,
there is a purging of the flesh. There is also a purging of the conscience.
Then there is the purifying, purging of the heart by FAITH!

  • Acts 15:8-10
8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness,
    giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9 And put no difference between us [Jews] and them [Gentiles],
purifying [purging] their hearts by faith.

At the last supper, Jesus told the disciples He would wash their feet...then they would clean/purged all over. If you would be 'purged', 'clean', 'purified' all over....Jesus Christ will 'wash your feet'!

That passage came to mind this morning....some are gold and silver while others are wood and earth. All are in His great house. At the end of days another flood will come...not sent by God but by Satan:

  • Revelation 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

This flood is one of deception and some of "the woman," the church...will be carried away. They are those "in a great house" that are "of earth." Earth is washed away by floods. What of the wood? Satan sends a great flood but God purifies with fire...after that flood of deception. Fire consumes wood but refines gold and silver.

WW ...The Lord has given you some wonderful thoughts Re: ...gold, silver, wood, earth. In going back and reading about the 'pattern' of the temple given to David which Solomon built, (1 Chronicles 28:11-29:2) contains gold, silver, brass and iron, precious stones and wood. It's quite staggering just to read about, let alone comprehend the magnitude of what it all means! AND, yes I believe God has all types of these IN HIS TEMPLE, and purifies each as He sees fit! Even wood, totally burned is 'ash' & 'dust', ...added to good soil makes wonderful gardens!

A side note - purified charcoal (wood 80/90% consumed) is quite helpful to relieve internal disorders, as in upset stomach, gas, & diarrhea, just take enough water with it, as it also is constipating! :yes

The resurection is past already... if the elect could, by their own righteousness works or efforts of purging, cleansing, and/or purifying themselves - become perfect to the point of sinless perfection - and they (we) could be a replica of Jesus Christ in the flesh... then, there would be no need of a RESURRECTION for the righteous elect of God! No...?

Hi Ret.... :wave

I've been thinking about this lately. The reason is....

Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to His throne.

I see that as a spiritual catching up. For a time I wondered if it was the resurrection, the first resurrection of [Rev.20:6]. But I see them as two separate events. To be of the first resurrection one must be translated, caught up, during our earthly life.

Anyway....just thinking, and wanted to get your input. :-)

Jesus says 'I AM the RESURRECTION'....the FIRST RESURRECTION! If I am IN HIM then I am IN THE FIRST RESURRECTION spoken of in Rev 20:6!
