Judges 13 said:
"And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What [is] thy name...?
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it [is] secret?
The fact that a secret was being discussed caught my attention! I had to read more...
So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered [it] upon a rock unto the LORD: and [the angel] did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on. For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on [it], and fell on their faces to the ground. But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he [was] an angel of the LORD.
WAIT! Did The Lord just reveal Himself without telling His name? Why? And how did God do that? Let me read that again; how does He reveal a secret while still concealing it? Manoah knows what I mean.
  • Test riddle: (this one doesn't count) We all know why God was called the Terror of Yakov (Jacob). Name a lesson we could learn from that?
  • Test Answer(s): (see Gen 35:5 Recall what we all know: the "Fear of the Lord" is the beginning of Widsom) or
"Nobody can see God and live".
Manoah referred to this well known Scripture and...
...said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. But his wife said unto him...
[The secret of her counsel to her husband is omitted by Sparrow]

We have seen a secret. And we are left with a mystery (or is it the other way round?). Why did God choose a woman to deliver such a critical message about the Grace of God to her husband? Was it the husband's sin? Or was it hers? Certainly it could not be "God's sin"

--Quoting 'The Princess Bride', "that is inconceivable."

Inconceivable! Actor Wallace Shawn holds a dagger to actress Robin Wright in a classic scene from 1987's "The Princess Bride"

:confused HINT: Manoah and his wife were the father and mother of Samson.
THE REAL RIDDLE: (Thanks for waiting): What did Samson's mommy say to his daddy about the Secret and the Worry? Was it wisdom?

Kindly pardon my attempt at drama; make your guesses in reply here before you open your online bibles... or look at Judges 13 HERE
It's okay, the probability of anybody except the Lord watching you (right in the instant you check) is very low. :silly
Extra bonus question (I don't know this one, it's for people who love challenge): What is the name of the mother of Samson? NO! It isn't Mrs. Manoah, or if it is, that doesn't count.

I won't answer now because I had to look it up. This scripture could be brought up in the marriage thread!

I like the nature of riddles. You're right; the "hidden questions" and their answers are better than the simple.

How sweet are the lessons of the Lord?

The word translated "secret" in the KJV is the Hebrew pil'iy and is more accurately translated "incomprehensible," though none of the more popular versions translate it that way, though the NIV comes close in saying, "Why do you ask My name? It is beyond understanding."

The answer may not be so easily grapsed after all! "Zounds, Watson, the game's afoot!" (No, Holmes never actually said that.) :D

That aspect (incomprehensible) ties in with my Princess Bride quote, "that is inconceivable!" :crazy (love that quote)

Thanks, TND - I like learning the meanings of new-to-me words.
I've heard somewhere that the meaning of the word translated "mystery" (Gk. mystērion) is more like "this has been revealed -->" or the secret counsels which are hidden from ungodly and wicked men but plain to the godly.

Yep, spot on. The Greeks sure could say a lot with one well-defined word. :thumbsup
