Continuing the process as of the sixth trumpet, an angel begins the introduction to the next phase of judgement, the detail-rich seventh trumpet with its associated events, plagues and cups of wrath.
The image is that of an angel, right foot on water, left on land, he is facing north, from which the invading armies will approach.
The north is frequently referred to in prophecy.
The reason is that to attack from the eastern empires, you have to follow the fertile crescent north, west and then southward through Lebanon in order to attack Israel.
The approach from the north is what is known as an invasion route, a concept familiar to cold warriors tasked with defending places such as the western coast of Korea, or the Fulda Gap in Germany.
Its defined as terrain conducive to the rapid approach of an army about to invade another country.
The other reason for mentioning the north is that Jerusalem faces southward and its only level ground faces northward, a tactical vulnerability as the wall can be approached by seige machines.
The important things to keep in mind when addressing the seventh trumpet are;
1. the seventh trumpet is where the mystery of God is described and dealt with.
2. every last detail that has been left will now take place.
3. many of the events are not witnessed on earth.
4. many of the events are non-chronological.
The idea of a prophet consuming a roll before the Lord is shown twice within the old testament.
The idea of a person's belly filling with bitterness comes from the law where the dust from the sanctuary is swept, gathered, and placed in a water-filled cup given to a women suspected of adultery.
The idea is that of embracing that which can kill you, as in the last generation before the fall of Jerusalem, they kept the official cult in place, yet they along with the king were apostates.
There ae two instances where a measuring rod is used;
1. Achaz uses one to measure the pagan altar he saw in Damascus. He would then return to Jerusalem where he erected a replica of the same on the temple grounds.
2. Ezekiel would be tasked with measuring the future temple in a vision he saw.
Both examples represent the idea of measuring a project as a comitment to build.
As far as the use of models, both Moses and David were shown small-scale models by God, an example of visualizing, commitment and continuing until the vision becomes a reality.
The introduction of prophetic ministries often include an initial revelation, confirmation, fulfillment on a small scale which with time grows, a phenomenon seen in the lives of Samuel, Daniel and others.
This particular situation is different, the outer courts have been defiled by gentiles, they are excluded.
This will be the first time within Revelations that 3 1/2 years and 42 months will make its appearance.
The details come straight from the old testament, the two live trees come from Zekariah, the use of two witnesses comes from the law.
There is one detail, the ministries described are those of three prophetic ministries;
Moses
Elijah
Elisha.
Take into account that the bible will later state that it is given unto man to die but once, you then have a situation where the witnesses cannot de identified.
