The Shack

I would like to know WHY The Shack appeals to many, many Christians!

The depiction of the Trinity is awful, the gospel in the book is ungodly.

Let's try to tell as many people as possible, about the dangers of the book. Yes, it's fiction,
but that doesn't make it more permissable. I can think of a LOT of fiction books that a
Christian has no business reading, like Harlequin romances, or the old Anne Rice books, etc.
Even the new ones, really.

Please tell others WHY The Shack is not a good book. :praying

Good argument, Biblereader. I never considered that angle before.

I liked the book and I have to say that it influenced me to accept Jesus. I came to Christianity in April of this year and shortly before making my decision read this book among others. I thought the book was powerful and had some strong positive messages. Not saying the whole book is correct but we cannot ignore the good things in the book. Here is where it helped me.

- God works in mysterious ways. Even suffering can teach lessons and bring you closer to God.
- Tragedies often times can lead to bigger and better things down the road. This applied to me in my own life. My father died when I was 16 and I now see this in a strange way as helping me grow as a person. I would not be who I am today if this had not happened to me. The book has a great way of pointing this out as well.
- Great examples of God forgiving us for our sins if we repent and accept Jesus.

I understand it has some problems but let's not be too quick to condemn it when it has obviously brought people to Jesus and God. I think that is a great thing.

Many people thought the same thing about Hitler. There were some people who saw Hitler coming to power and became Christians.

Joseph was sold into slavery. He told his brothers, "You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good."

There are many blacks in this country who are Christian that wouldn't have been if their ancestors were not brought here from Africa. Let's not be too quick to condemn slavery because some people have gotten saved.

Pragmatism is of the flesh. God does not depend on our compromises with Satan in order to get those saved He calls.

Timf...keep spending time with the Lord, brother. The wisdom you share is from Him and is appreciated.

So, we are now comparing "The Shack" to Hitler??? Come on now people. Really? That is about the most absurd thing I have read on these boards in the last week or so.

WOW :lol

I can't believe they said that?! :lol Well, my family is NOT African American, but yet we're Christians. Also, being Christian is a personal choice. Slavery or not people are going to be reached by Christ. How do they explain thousands of years of religious populations in Ethiopia? I guess the great Europeans are responsible for that too. Ugh :screwloose

The problem I have with "The Shack" and any other book like it, is why is there a need to portray God in a different way than he is in the bible. I mean if people can't accept God the way he truly is in the bible, should we pacify them by portraying him as a false God they can accept. I must admit I didn't finish "The Shack," I just couldn't handle the way God, the Holy Spirit and Christ were depicted. Anyways, the first thought I had when I read Young's description of God was that he stole his idea for his image of God from the movie "The Matrix." The God in his book seemed a lot like "the Oracle" in "The Matrix." A healthy sized motherly type black woman baking in kitchen. The Oracle was a an all knowing entity in the movie. So much for orginality. Even his Holy Spirit seemed oddly familar to me, though I can't place from where. Personally, I feel if people can't find, relate to and love the God of the bible by reading and studying the bible, then they surely aren't going to find him in "The Shack." The more I read and study the bible the more I see how majestic God truly is and my love for him grows all the more everyday. The bible is the only book I never tire of reading and rereading over and over again. People shouldn't need other "fictional" books, to say the least to find the God their looking for, they just need to pick up the bible and read and study it. We need to stop sugar-coating God and making him out to be some warm fuzzy teddy bear (not to say he isn't full of love or lovable) to reach the majority of the peoples sensibilities and write inspirational stories about how he truly is, that is if we are trying to reach them through fiction.
