The Bible speaks of some that love little and some that love much (Luke 7:47). And Jesus spoke of the limit of man's love,

John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Men have willingly laid down their lives for those they love, but God's love went farther; he gave the life of his Son. "For God so loved the world, that he gave..." (Jn. 3:16). Love is giving, and how much a man loves will decide how much he gives.

Love is a sliding scale with hate on the one end and indifference on the other.

This reminds me of Abraham in Genesis 22 that was so obedient to Gods that he was ready to follow through in Gods instruction to sacrifice his son Isaac, but knowing the love of God believed God would raise him back from the dead as the covenant promise was made through Isaac. If we truly remain in the will of God which is love then there would be no place for hate in our hearts. It's when we allow ourselves to get into the flesh that that scale will lean towards hate and indifference.
