Bible Study The tower of Babel

In Genesis 11 verses 1 to 11, God decides to split the language of man and scatter him about the lands, what was his purpose? I've always wondered about this event, known of course as the tower of Babel which begets phrases like "Babbling idiots".

Why did the Lord decide to split man apart when he was one people with one language moving basically in the same direction? It seems as is written in verse 6 that God was worried that man was unrestrained and could do what he basically wanted.

In my understanding, God was watching the start of what he destroyed the world for already once and he wasn't about to have that start over again so he threw a monkey into man's wrench in order to assure that from a divided population of seeds, there would always be a crop of good fruit who would follow in his sted.

That's why I always enjoyed John Houston's classic movie "The Bible", the scene of the haunty king raising his bow to the heavens and shooting that arrow into the sky...I can just picture the Lord's thinking..."Ok, you think you're so impressive my Son, try this on for size." Poof! Now everyone sounds like New York City cab drivers.

I think the answer is in your question. 'They were moving basically in the same direction'... unfortunately that direction was away from God and towards death and destruction.

Something I have pondered recently... if it was 'the confounding of languages' that prevented man from coming together and reaching the pinnacle of rebellion against God... now that language has ceased to be a barrier (or much of one) to prevent man from again coming together to do the same... how long can it be till 'the End'.

Peace!
