We are to watch, watch for the sigs that will indicate His soon return. First off you are wrong, Jesus was not talking to unbelievers, The thief in the night is to his church only. Just as Jesus said to the apostles in Matt ch 24 thur 25, be alert let no mislead you. If we are waiting for the rapture at the "second coming" where Jesus's feet touch upon the mount of Olives. Well then there is on thief in the night. Let's do the math, The antichrist desecrates the temple and 1260 days later Jesus comes, As lighting flashes from east to west so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.. Meaning, all will see Him. Also you say that a pre trib rapture puts the church to sleep.. again wrong, very wrong. Jesus tells us to be on the alert to always keep looking and waiting for we do not know the "day" or the hour of his return. So we pre tribers tell people to get ready because if Jesus comes tonight you will have hell to pay so get ready today no time to spare, hurry don't be fooled. Now if we do it your way, When you say repent or else, well they have at less 7 yrs to think this over, no urgency to get caught off guard. I can party tonight because as you say Jesus isn't coming for at less 7 or more years.. So who is putting the church to sleep here, pre trib NO.. post trib..YES!

Why did Paul write the letter to the Thess, because they thought they had missed the coming of the Lord and they where going to be caught in the tribulation. They Knew that the second coming had not happened because the end of the world had not taken place, but others had told them the day of the lord had passed and they missed it and the tribulation was going to start.. That is why the letters where sent. To tell them the rapture had not happened yet.

I didn;t say He was talking TO unbelievers He was talking ABOUt unbeliever, and no the church will not be snuck up on We will know when Christ return is coming. It is the wicked that get caught off gaurd. That is the whole point of His retur being like the flood of Noah. Noah knew the flood was coming but the wicked didn;t blieve, that is how it will be When Christ returns. via Matthew 24:37-39

37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

You need to get out of those fictional books, and start living in reality.
