The trumpets and the vials are one

I've seen many "Tribulation maps" but there are few that actually have it even close to right (geez, I sound humble don't I?) Here's something quick to begin to put things back in perspective.

The Trumpets and Vials in Revelation are not separate but the same.

The first trumpet is "upon the earth" (Rev.8:7)

The second trumpet is "into the sea" (Rev.8:8)

The third trumpet is upon "the rivers and fountains of waters (Rev.8:10)

The fourth trumpet is into "the sun" (Rev.8:12)

The fifth trumpet is upon the men "which have not the seal of God" (Rev.9:4)

The sixth trumpet is on "the great river Euphrates" (Rev.9:13)

At the seventh trumpet we hear, "the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord...lightnings...voices...thunderings...

earthquakes...great hail" (Rev.11:15-19)

The first vial is "upon the earth" (Rev.16:2)

The second vial is "upon the sea" (Rev.16:3)

The third vial is "upon the rivers and fountains of waters" (Rev.16:4)

The fourth vial is "upon the sun" (Rev.16:8)

The fifth vial is "upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom" (Rev.16:10)

The sixth vial is upon "the great river Euphrates" (Rev.16:12)

At the seventh vial we hear, "It is done...voices...thunders...lightnings...great earthquake...great hail" (Rev.16:17-21)

If we read each trumpet and vial together we find that they explain further what is happening, they add to each other. At the sounding of the seventh trumpet the bible says, "the mystery of God should be finished" (Rev.10:7). And at the seventh vial it says, "It is done."

Why would God list these events twice? Well, why did he give Pharaoh slightly different dreams of the same event?

"And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass." (Gen.41:32)

Remember what Joseph told Pharaoh about his dream? "The dream of Pharaoh is one" (Gen.41:25). So to is it with John's vials and trumpets, "the vision is one."

Gen 41:32 `And because of the repeating of the dream unto Pharaoh twice, surely the thing is established by God, and God is hastening to do it.

No, they are separate judgements. Notice the trumpets involve only a third of the same thing. The last vials must take place in a very short time since I can't imagine life on earth would be livable under those conditions. Notice Christ said that unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved (alive).

The trumpets onward are "the Day of the Lord" actually a separate event from the Great Tribulation, but a continuing time just after it of woe.

Here... a picture tells a thousand words:

The trumpets and vials, the one explains the other.
1st vial speaks of a grievious sore upon men, the 1st trumpet tells what it was (hail/fire)
2nd vial tells of the people dying of the plague, the 2nd trumpet tells of the animals dying.
3rd trumpet tells of men dying, the 3rd vial tells why.
Etc. etc. etc. Read it yourself, it goes on and on (too much coincidence.)

Also, at the last trumpet it is "finished" (Rev.10:7) and at the last vial "it is done." (Rev.16:17).

In addition, at the last trumpet, Re 11:15 "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever." God's first act as supreme is not to pour out seven more plagues on his own kingdom.

One more thing just to help (take it or leave it.) Tim above is right that "the day of the LORD" (God's wrath) is not the same thing as the tribulation (persecution). The wrong order of events that most people teach will make people look for Christ to appear before the antichrist and so they'll follow the wrong one. It's too long to go into here, but here's the proper sequence of events:

Antichrist is revealed - 3 1/2 years persecution (tribulation) - sun and moon darkened, Jesus appears - living believers drop dead and their spirits meet the Lord in the air and return with him to heaven - God pours out his wrath (day of the LORD) for probably seven years - Jesus returns to set up his kingdom, believer's spirit's are joined to their resurrected bodies, the thousand year reign begins - after the thousand years Satan is loosed, nations rebel and are destroyed - the dead receive judgment and punishment - New Jerusalem comes down, eternity begins

It will be fun to explore this idea. Similar is not the same, but patterns are very useful in interpreting content.
