Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

When a leader sets an example to be followed it is known as a precedent.
God establishes and follows precedents throughout the Bible.
Revelation cannot be understood unless you follow the many precedents in the Bible.

On example is the description the 144,000; it mentions those that did not defile themselves with women.
It comes from 1Samuel where it describes how the sons of Eli despised the offerings and slept with the women that kept watch of the sanctuary.
It identifies the 144,000 as priests and rulers, those that officiate the offerings, teach the law and examine lepers.

I would agree, only sometimes I have seen a number of things in Revelation and in prophecy get incorrectly applied to the wrong precedents, such as what Historicists and Preterists will often do. But I don't really have the time or energy for getting into specifics. Just thought I'd comment that in principle this general rule is true.
