The Village

I'm surprised that this movie hasn't been reviewed in this forum yet.

I thought that The Village was a very, very good movie. I enjoyed how the story unfolded, and I also found it very unusual that, given the time period that "the movie" attempted to recreate, there was no mention of God (only implications). And once again, I enjoyed the "twist."

I own the DVDs of M Night Shyamalan's last three movies--Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs--and I'm consistently impressed by his ability to tell a story. He creates tension through dialogue and mystery. The Village continues in that vein.

I'm surprised that the critics gave it negative reviews, and that so many people didn't like it. However, in talking with people about their dislike of the movie, I found them saying "I figured out the movie when....." My advice for those who haven't seen it yet is this: Don't try to figure anything out because you are cheating yourself out of a good movie. Instead, let the writer/director tell the story.

Sorry that my review is so general. I'm trying not to spoil it for anyone who has yet to see it.

I saw this film I hated it it was the most cheap film i have ever seen the lord of the rings would top this any day.

I saw this movie a couple of days ago... terrible, saw the twist coming a mile off. There was one scare in the entire movie, and that was a girl falling in a hole, she climbed out and continued on her way, completely irrelevant to the story.
M Nights movies have had a downward curve, sixth sense was great, unbreakable was worse, signs was terrible and now village takes it to new lows.

The problem is everyone expects the twist. If it had been a different director I would have been very surprised.

village

I don't know why so many people do not like the village! I thought it was great. M. Night shamalan is the only new director out there that is producing intelligent, classy, and unique work. At a time when hollywood was full of remakes and copy cats he blazed a trail with his hitchcock esque film style. He also includes moral themes that are hidden in the plot of every movie and I am surprised more Christians didn't respond to this. This movie had a neat underlying theme and with so many plot turns it was a welcome challenge. If you are content with your main stream, one size fits all films than go ahead; but me, I choose the new, daring work of M. Night Shamalan.

I just saw the movie and i loved it. I thought it was great. A suspense movie without a lot of violence and gore and I don't recall hearing a cuss word. I enjoyed this movie

I liked 'The Village'. It wasn't his best work, which I think was 'Unbreakable' but it was still a good movie. Compared to many other films coming out, it really takes its place as one of the better ones.

I just saw the movie and I liked it very much, I also liked the fact that it had no gore in it to speak of. I must not be that smart because I didnt see what was coming untill the father told his daughter what he did.
Anyway it was a good movie.

I think my problem with the 'twist' (and with many others, I'm sure), was not that one saw it from a mile away (I, myself did not), but that it was was it was to begin with.

The twist in Sixth Sense was good because it was shocking within the scope of the content. The Village, however, took us from a spooky, monster "don't-go-into-the-woods" creepy movie to modern day reality. It competely negated itself and what everyone was feeling it was building towards.

Its akin to watching a movie like 'Halloween' and finding out that Michael Myers turned out to be Jamie Lee Curtis' grandpa having a 'good old fashioned' Halloween scare with her and everyone who was killed was in on the prank.

In other words, it wasn't what we were expecting (or wanting to expect) and it was a let down.

The problem is that the director is known for twists. So now everyone is looking for it. He needs to direct under a new name to surprise people.

Bought the DVD. Still love it. In fact, I really like all of Shymalan's movies. With the exception of the Sixth Sense, I can pretty much show his movies to my teenager without fear of any inappropriateness. He tells a good, clean story.

Just saw it this weekend. Loved it. 'Night' is the new Hitchcock. He doesn't need explosions or fancy dialogue to tell his story. The best aspect of all of his movies is the minimalism in the dialogue. Every word is there for a reason.

I guessed at the ending, too - and was right. But it did not ruin the movie for me.

We just signed up for Blockbuster online and I ordered 'The Village', 'Heartbreakers' and 'Spiderman 2'. Our movies are due to arrive tomorrow, so I'm anxious to see it. I love scary/suspense movies and am glad to hear this isn't full of gore. Gore is something that I DON'T like.

Then I also recommend:
Halloween
Jaws (mind you,who hasn't seen Jaws?)
Open Water (though there is alot of swearing and a bit of nudity)
Ghost and the Darkness (okay, there is some gore due to lions mauling people, but the suspense/scary aspect drowns it out and it's a true nail biter)

I've seen Jaws and All of the Halloween movies. Who hasn't?

I almost got Open Water. I'll get it next. I just got finished watching The village. I liked it....until the ending! I hate movies that end that way. Grrrr!!!!! It was a pretty good movie though. VERY different than most scary/suspense movies.

Open Water had to be the most depressing movie ever made.

Open Water was the "feel good" movie of the year. :-? It made me feel even worse knowing that a case like the one depicted in the movie really did happen.

How can you even know how to make a movie involving only two people who aren't even around to tell you what really happened?

the end was a cop-out

Interesting movie, but a disappointment. Cut out the scenes from the climbing the fence to get to the road, to the climbing of the fence to reenter the forest, and I would have felt less cheated. Good enough to rent once, not twice, and never to buy. He's a reasonable "imitation" of Hitchcock, but not "another" Hitchcock.
