The Word Reverend

Lewis

Member
I asked this before' but nobody would touch it' and I was wondering why. There is only one place in the Bible that uses the word (reverend) and the Bible is not talking about man. It is therefore improper to call a man reverend. It is ascribed to God only. My understanding is that the Catholics were the first to start this. But it is dead wrong. And nowhere in the New testament is this word used. So do you call your pastor reverend ? I am not putting you down if you do. But you should know that the word is not used for man.

Psalm 111:9 (King James Version)
9He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

Interesting. I have never thought about this.
hmmm, I will ponder it a little and see.
Yes many don't use the term anymore including my former pastor in Philly and many more up there and around the world. If you call my former pastor that' he will correct you. And so will a lot of the others. pastor' elder' minister' bishop' but not reverend. Another term that the Catholics like to use, and the Protastants brought with them when they split' is the Right Reverend. That term is crazy and only certain denominations will use that term. But all denominations use the word reverend. But Psalm 111:9 (King James Version) is clear as a bell, that it is for God only. I quit calling people reverend around 92. My son's mother corrected me' and told me why.

Hey Lewis
I was looking at this word reverend and to be honest, never gave it a second thought. Thanks for the bible study lesson.

Here is what McGee says

He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name [Ps. 111:9].

Here we find the word reverend. The holy God is the reverend God. That title should never be applied to a man. No preacher should be called “Reverend.†This is a title for God alone.
God has a redemption for His people.

yup' so there you have it.

I call him pastor. I have never thought that any man is worthy to be called Reverend. I agree that only God qualifies for that title. I also don't like for men to be called Lord. I have only one Lord. Also, at the risk of offending any Catholics here, Matthew says, "Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven." We should be careful not to use titles for mere mortals that only God is entitled to possess.

Matthew 23:5-10

I always thought "reverend" was an honorary title, the Church will title a bishop "the Very Reverend", and all priests are "the Reverend father", but NO clergy is called just plain "reverend", or even "the reverend".

It's "Bishop", "Father".

No man should be called reverend' or reverend father' or the right reverend.
