In Mark 9:43-48 we read And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

Their worm that does not die is sin. Jesus said in John 8:24 “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

So the removal of sin is necessary so we do not die in our sins. And that is where Jesus came in for us, who was also made to be sin for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Which is also why Jesus is shown as a worm in Psalm 22:6 “But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.”

The word worm there in Psalm 22 is Strongs H8438 shown in the following manner: scarlet (34x), worm (8x), crimson (1x). Bible usage…worm, scarlet stuff, crimson, worm - the female 'coccus ilicis', scarlet stuff, crimson, scarlet, the dye made from the dried body of the female of the worm "coccus ilicis".

There are some interesting symbolisms found in this worm “coccus ilicis” But the message here in the color is significant in unlocking the mystery of why we see a Red Dragon, and scarlet colored beast in scripture.
The reason being is because the Lord showed sin in mankind as red, just as Adam means “earthy, red

Notice what the Lord says here in Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

Our old sinful man was to be crucified with Jesus, thus destroying the body of sin. Romans 6:6 “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”

And when we are raised up a new man in Christ and washed, we are given new white garments which are meant to be kept clean from being spotted by the flesh, which is sin.

Their worm that does not die is sin.
The word "worm" refers to the maggots which eat dead flesh.
The use of the image communicates the loathsomeness of death.
Death is the consequence of sin.
The consuming of the body by worms and insects occurs after death.
Which is also why Jesus is shown as a worm in Psalm 22:6 “But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.”
Oi veh.
The person in this Psalm is David, not Christ, though the psalm does prophetically describes the mocking of Jesus as he hung on the cross.
Psa 22:7-8 All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me, they wag their heads; He committed his cause to the LORD; let Him deliver him, let him rescue him, for he delights in Him!

But I am a worm, H8438 and no man; H376 a reproach H2781 of men, H120 and despised H959 of the people. H5971

Same word in Isaiah 1:18 concerning sin being like crimson H8438 same as worm H8438

"Come now, H3212 and let us reason together, H3198 saith H559 the LORD: H3068 though your sins H2399 be as scarlet, H8144 they shall be as white H3835 as snow; H7950 though they be red H119 like crimson, H8438 they shall be as wool. H6785

I don't believe Jesus was talking about their worm that never dies in Mark 9:43-48 as being eternal maggots. :)

Also David spoke by the Spirit and he foresaw the sufferings of Christ as is written....

1 Peter 1:10-11 "Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow."

Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
2 O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.

6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him."

Matthew 27:46
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

I always thought that this was David's cry of despair, but now I do see this as David speaking of Christ as only God could have given him this revelation. Here is a good commentary that does lead me to think this way.

The Crimson Or Scarlet Worm

Psalm 22 (sometimes called the Psalm of the Cross) is a great chapter of the Bible that tells about the suffering and death of Christ 1,000 years before he actually gave his life upon the cross. Verse 1 says, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? …” In the gospels of Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34, Jesus cried out the same words while hanging on the cross. In verse 6 of Psalm 22, Jesus says something odd: “But I am a worm, and no man.” What did he mean by saying “I am a worm”?

Usually in the Bible, the Hebrew word for a worm is “rimmah”, which means a maggot – but the Hebrew word Jesus used here for worm, is TOLA’ATH, which means “Crimson worm” or “Scarlet worm”. Both scarlet and crimson are the colors of blood – deep red.

The Crimson worm [coccus ilicis] is a very special worm that looks more like a grub than a worm. When it is time for the female or mother Crimson worm to have babies (which she does only one time in her life), she finds the trunk of a tree, a wooden fencepost or a stick. She then attaches her body to that wood and makes a hard crimson shell. She is so strongly and permanently stuck to the wood that the shell can never be removed without tearing her body completely apart and killing her.

The Crimson worm then lays her eggs under her body and the protective shell. When the baby worms (or larvae) hatch, they stay under the shell. Not only does the mother’s body give protection for her babies, but it also provides them with food – the babies feed on the LIVING body of the mother!

After just a few days, when the young worms grow to the point that they are able to take care of themselves, the mother dies. As the mother Crimson worm dies, she oozes a crimson or scarlet red dye which not only stains the wood she is attached to, but also her young children. They are colored scarlet red for the rest of their lives.

After three days, the dead mother Crimson worm’s body loses its crimson color and turns into a white wax which falls to the ground like snow. So what did Jesus mean by saying “I am a worm”? There are a lot of ideas what Jesus might have meant, but nobody really knows for sure. However, it is very interesting that, just like the Crimson worm, Jesus sacrificed or gave up his life on a tree so that his children might be washed with his crimson blood and their sins cleaned white as snow. He died for us, that we might live through him!

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18

Also compare Psalm 22:8. " 8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him."

Compare....
Matthew 27:43
He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

I love the challenge of looking into things I never saw before and this is one of those things as the OT prophetically does draw us to Christ who is found in the OT and NT.

Psa 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

Psa 22:10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.

How do you view Psa 22 :10

Scofield and his cheep typology

Compare the wording of Psalm 22:10 to Isaiah 49 concerning the Holy One of God.

Psa 22:10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.

Isaiah 49 "Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. 2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.5 And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.
6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth."

Isaiah 42:6
I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

Luke 2:30-32 "For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
