I had to laugh at this article. There's truth to it. It explains why the supplement-taking, watch-your-diet and exercising healthoholic is more prone to end up sick and at the doctor's than the beer drinking, pizza-shoveling couch potato watching his favorite sports games.

While I endorse good habits, the crux of the article is one's attitude has to go with it. Seems good attitude with sloppy habits actually gets one further than good habits but crummy attitude. That's why I often joke about exercisoholics and healthoholics. It's not that good habits are bad, but the obsession that one has to be "healthy" worries them so much they get stressed out and end up sick. Of course, not every "healthy" habit is as healthy as some think, and that may also contribute, but that's another topic.

ok, I can buy that. I didn't read the article to believe it. the martial arts I have done deals a lot with learning to control ones attitude. you would be amazed at how me can do if we learn to control our reactions to a situation.

So looking at my poor mental health I suppose I'm gonna die young.

I think one sort of attitude Christians have isn't so much depression or extremely negative feelings as the article suggests, but simply a mindset that they "need" to go to the doctor constantly and have to be under his constant care. If it's a genuine medical problem, I agree provided that the basic cause of the problem is addressed. But more times than not medications are just symptomatic relief or "number lowering" pills that most of the population is on. This, of course, develops a mindset that one has to be dependent on another to survive, and in effect becomes the very demise of that person ultimately. Dependency spurs on more negative feelings, stress, and tension that the person must always "live up" to something, and usually an impossible goal at that. And then they slowly kill themselves with the negativity (e.g. one's immune response goes down opening the way for diseases, cancers and whatnot). That's more what I have in mind. In short, enjoy life and no, you don't have to run to the doctor's. If they need you to keep coming back instead of finding a solution so you can get on with life, then they are not worth your time, or your money, and it will only kill you sooner.

My health book from school several grades back mentioned this. Not in the same way, but it did mention that mental health and physical health are connected, and negative emotions affect your body in a bad way. While good ones affect you in a good way. Laughter does a lot of good, even.
It said something somewhere like "a day of worry is more wearing than a week of work." Not sure if that is strictly true, though.

Stress can also have physical effects.

Which brings me to the story of the lady who went to see her doctor.

She said: Doctor, "I don't think I suffer from stress.

But I think I'm a carrier..."

Blessings.
