Director:Shane Meadows
Writer:Shane Meadows
Release Date:27 April 2007 (UK)
Genre:Drama
Plot Outline:A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends even like family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows.
Plot Keywords:Little Boy / Racism / 1980s / Dead Father / Ethnic Hatred
July 1983, as it happens, is the month I got wed
It was 2 years after the Toxteth riots of '81
4 years after the '78/'79 Winter of Discontent (inc Brick Lane race riots)
I saw this often gruesome film 18-rated by accidentally wandering into what I thought was a free creative arts exhibit, having just seen 2 such exhibits (@ http://www.FACT.co.uk)
The above list of 'plot keywords' left out a sickening multitude of ****
It & the plot summary also fail to mention that the crowd were not just skinheads but keen National Front recruits
Only the dramatic end counters the many racist statements
I only stayed in as the 1st 20 minutes made me suspect that the film was a rather unsubtle recruitment film for the outlawed NF - it was that bad I was determined to do a critique that readers may want to email to http://www.parliament.uk
Without giving away the dramatic end, we can sure tell MPs that the plethora of racist violence & obscenities would demand specific, verbally-expressed correction
Frankly, just as Al Qaeda sample clips from war films to whip up impressionable recruits, so NF & KKK can similarly show @ 90%+ of this to theirs
Must go
