Thread of OT types

Websters dictionary....“a person or thing [in the Old Testament] believed to foreshadow another [in the New Testament].” For example, comparing Adam in the Old Testament to Christ, Romans 5:14 says Adam “is a type of Him who was to come.”

Here's another.

Manna, in the OT was a 'type' of God's word.

Exodus 16:4,35 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not....And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

Man in the OT needed to rely on God daily to sustain them with manna. Likewise, God's Word is manna which feeds the soul and sustains us today.

Luke 4:4 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' "(Also Mat. 4:4)

John 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

How about this...
The Jews were denied entry into the promised land because they turned back to their sins, just as mankind will be denied entry to heaven because they wouldn't turn from sin.

Thank you for this interesing and important topic. There are many OT types, and I will be happy to share some of them. First, I would like to ask about the one you mentioned. In what way Adam “is a type of Him who was to come”?

Thanks for the responses. The greatest painting ever made was made with words. In many ways, the Old Testament painted the New Testament.

Live, Jesus is often called the second Adam. Where the first failed, the second succeeded. Adams life had a significant impact on humanity, likewise, so did Jesus'. Mostly fixing the consequences of Adams failure.

Also see 1 Corinthians 14:45-52, Romans 5: 12-21 Paul calls Adam a type of Him who was to come.

Just wanted to note for everyone, that sometimes types are not listed as types in the Bible, but are very clearly types that have been recognized by theologians for a long time.

Here is another significant type with Adam. Eve was deceived in the garden and ate the forbidden fruit, i.e. sinned. The punishment for the sin is death or separation from God. Adam was not deceived (1 Timothy 2:14). Because of his love for his wife, Adam ate the forbidden fruit (took upon himself her sin) to be united with her. This points out to the Messiah who, because of his love for his wife, the Church, took upon himself our sins and died for us.

Live, I never heard that before. That's deep.

Me needs to ponder on that one for a while.

Jonah was a type of Jesus. Many people think that the type ends with Jonah being three days in the belly of the fish, like Jesus spent three days in Hades, and both rose from within those places. But Jonah preaching to Nineveh was also significant. They were Gentiles, and what happened after Jesus rose and ascended? The Gospel now went to all nations, yes salvation had come to the Gentiles, as Peter said in Acts. There's more, I found a cool link, apparently it goes a lot deeper than I even thought.

THE TYPOLOGY OF JONAH AND JESUS

The story of Jonah foreshadows the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
JONAHJESUS
1. His mission was to call the gentile Assyrians of Nineveh to repentance and acknowledgement of Yahweh as the source of their salvation [Jonah 1:1; 3:1-2].1. His mission was to call all of mankind, including the gentile nations, to repentance and into Covenant with Yahweh [Matthew 28:18-20].
2. Jonah was willing to sacrifice his life for the salvation of his shipmates [Jonah 1:12].2. Jesus was willing to sacrifice His life for the salvation of the world [Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45; John 1:29; 1 Timothy 2:6].
3. He was entombed in the belly of a great fish [Jonah 2:1].3. After Jesus' death He was placed in a tomb [Matthew 27:60; Mark 6:29; Luke 23:53].
4. On the third day Jonah was "resurrected" from the belly of the fish [Jonah 2:11/10].4. On the third day Jesus was resurrected from the tomb [Matthew 17:23; 20:19; 28:1-10; Mark 9:31; 10:34; 16:1-7; Luke 9:22; 18:33; 24:7; 24:46].
5. After his "resurrection" from the belly of the fish, Jonah continued his mission to call the gentile Assyrians to repentance and salvation [Jonah 3:1-3].5. After His resurrection from the tomb, Jesus continued His mission to found the universal Church and to commission the Apostles to spread the gospel to every nation on earth ;it is a mission that continues even after His Ascension [Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:12-20; Luke 24:13-53; Acts chapter 1].
6. Jonah preached that Nineveh would be destroyed in 40 days if the people did not repent [Jonah 3:4].6. After His resurrection, Jesus taught the New Covenant Church for 40 days before His Ascension [Acts 1:3].
7. Jonah taught that failure to repent sin brings judgment but salvation is a gift of God [Jonah 1:1; 3:4-5, 9-10]7. Jesus taught that failure to repent sin brings judgment but salvation is a gift of God [Matthew 5:21-22; John 5:22-29; 8:34-36; Luke 24:47; John 3:17; 5:34; 10:19; Acts 2:21].

There are many types. One that immediately comes to mind is the Passover. The Jews were told to take the blood of a lamb and put it's blood on the top and two sides of a doorway. And of course, Jesus is called "the Lamb of God" in the Gospel of John. This forms a cross. The Tabernacle in the Wilderness traveled through the Wilderness in the shape of a cross also. Enoch is a type of the Rapture of the church. As "God took him" before the flood decimated the earth. There are many, many more.

Here is another type with Adam. When Adam was created, he was told, “Be fruitful and multiply”(Genesis 1:28). In Adam humankind multiplied from the physical standpoint. Physical things point out to spiritual things (Romans 1:19,20). Adam is a type of Christ. In Christ the believers are fruitful (John 15:1-8) by bringing forth the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

I’ll continue the types in the Passover. The Israelites had to put the blood of the lamb on the door to escape (pass over) the dearth of the firstborn. The Passover lamb is a type of Christ (1 Corinthians 5:7). Spiritually, our firstborn is the soul (Genesis 2:7). We need to put the blood of the Lamb on the door of our heart (Revelation 3:20), or believe in the sacrifice of Christ for us, so our soul will be saved.

Here's one that I used recently. Peter uses the Ark as a type of Jesus. Being placed into the Ark saved Noah and family from God's judgment, the flood. Being "placed into" Christ, our Ark, by way of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, also saves us from God's judgment.

1 Peter 3:20-21 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Yes, it is an excellent type. Noah and seven members of his family were saved in the Ark. Noah was a type of a savior (Hebrews 11:7, Peter 2:5). In fulfilment, in John 21 we read about seven disciples fishing in the boat (spiritual family of Jesus) and the resurrected Messiah among them.

In addition, even the description of the ark testifies about Christ's atonement.

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. (Genesis 6:14).

Hebrew words for "pitch" in these two instances mean "to make an atonement" and "ransom" (according to Strong's Concordance).

I heard somebody once say that the whole Exodus illustrates our salvation. Anyone care to elaborate?

Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
1 Corinthians 10:1-11

Here is a very abbreviated version.

The Israelites in the Old Testament were the chosen of Yahweh. To show by their example that He is salvation, Yahweh placed them in Egyptian slavery in the service of Pharaoh, to bring them out into the land of Canaan with great possessions, as He prophesied to Abram:

And the Lord said to Abram: Know that thy descendants shall be strangers in a land not their own, and shall enslave them, and oppress them four hundred years, but I will execute judgment upon the people by whom they shall be enslaved; after that they shall come forth with much substance (Genesis 15:13-14).

Similarly, true believers, exemplified by the Israelites (Romans 2:28), though chosen for eternal life (exemplified by the land of Canaan for the Israelites) from the beginning of the world (Ephesians 1:4,5), were to be given into Satan's service from birth so that the Creator would demonstrate His Love and save us from the sin of this world, enrich us with the fruits of the spirit, and bring us to the spiritual promised land (Ephesians 2:1-6). The same principle is demonstrated by nature (Romans 1:19,20): the fruit from the tree must fall into the ground so that many trees and fruits may grow from it. This is also why Adam had to be cast out of the Garden of Eden in order to populate the whole earth. All of this ultimately reflects a Savior who, from the state of the spiritual unity with the Father (John 17:5), had to come to earth and take on the sins of men in order to be resurrected with a life-giving spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45) and return to His kingdom with “great possessions”- the souls of believers, His wife (Ephesians 2:6, Col. 1:13).

Notice that in the wilderness, the first generation of Israelites died because of unbelief, and the second generation entered the Promised land (Numbers 14:29-31). This is the type of what the Savior was telling Nicodemus, “You must be born again” (John 3:7). Our first, carnal self has to be replaced by the “second-born” - new spiritual self to enter Eternal life. How? By the Grace and Mercy of God through the preaching of the Gospel.

The Lamb without blemish from the OT sacrifice is a type of Jesus. Who is called the same and also the Lamb of God. The Passover, that's a big one.

1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
