I do not know how you believe yet
Ah... Yes... I probably should post something about that in the new members section to give people fair warning.
Ok... Here it comes...
The story behind what I believe and why is a long one. Maybe I will tell more of it later, but for now I'll stick to the short version. I came to Christ in 1973. Since then I have met a number of people from various denominations and non-denominational / interdenominational fellowships, who have told me their beliefs about a number of doctrines. But how am I to know which ones are correct?
Besides learning about various doctrines from the different denominations, I've also learned something about church history (although I'm no expert). The reformers in the early 16th century had a slogan which many of you may be familiar with - "Sola Scriptura", or "Only Scripture". It refers to the idea that Scripture alone should be our guide in both faith and morals. Whenever doctrines or practices of the church or customs of society in general are in conflict with Scripture, we are to go by what the Bible says. Everything else has to yield.
For various reasons, which I won't go into in detail at this time, I started thinking about this about 15 years ago, and decided that I wanted that to be more than just a slogan in my life. I decided I would not only say that I believed "Sola Scriptura", but also live it. I started questioning everything and the result has been that I have rejected many doctrines that I used to hold dear and now I find myself going against the flow of both the church and society as a whole.
If you find my beliefs a little weird, then you know why.
