In Singapore, boys in general are not afraid of cockroaches while girls are usually afraid of cockroaches. This is due to the upbringing of the boys and girls in Singapore. From young, boys are encouraged to kill cockroaches when they see them and are therefore socially conditioned to be not afraid of cockroaches. Girls, on the other hand, are expected to scream when they see cockroaches and therefore become socially conditioned to fear cockroaches. Why do I talk about this gender differences in reactions to cockroaches in Singapore?

Well, I have a reason.

I want to compare the fear of cockroaches to the fear of devil and evil spirits in the Christian world today. Today, the devil is often seen as more powerful than he really is, due to social conditioning. Media often portray the devil as powerful and therefore from young, Christians are conditioned to fear the devil, much like how the girls in Singapore are conditioned to be afraid of the cockroaches.

If, one the other hand, from young, Christians are told of the authority we have in Christ to trample on snakes and scorpions and to cast out demons, we won't be as afraid of the devil as we are today. We, as Christians, really need to condition ourselves and our children from young to not fear the devil. We must remember that Christ's blood purchased for us all authority to bind and loose demons and nothing the devil did or will do can change that.

Parents, start conditioning your children to be unafraid of the devil today. Tell them about their authorities in Christ, and tell them how the devil is more afraid of them than they ought to be of him. Do not let them watch shows or cartoons that magnify the powers of the devil. Instead, surround them with shows or cartoons that declare the might of God's power.

Train your children to trust in God's power more than in the powers of Satan. It may be too late for you to condition yourself as you are brought up by the media to think of the devil in higher regard than he really deserves to be, but it is not too late for your child!
