Trench Coat Bashing?

P

Ok, Am i the only one that see's this going on? The meida is bashing trench coats.

most columbine references were not " white students shot several kids" it was "students in trench coats" it wasn't " 2 kids wearing sneakers" its "kids in trench coats.

Just like this kansas incident diverted.

Why bash trench coats?
I personally wear one, and because of the media, people think im the kind of person that kills puppies and shoots people. what the heck!

When the temperature is 80 degrees out, I honestly don't see the point of wearing one.... unless of course you're Batman or The Crow. Besides its easy to choke someone out wearing a gi... so we'd have a field day with the trench coat. Always dress for flexibility... :) .

i think its fun. people say i look scary as *EDITED BY ADMIN*. (and according to the saints, its pretty scary). Of course, I have long hair, frequently sporting a beard cause im too lazy to shave and im always daydreaming so I look angry cause my face is blank... its kinda funny sometimes.

ya i guess the 80 degree weather thing.

But I wear dark colors and pants ALL summer long..

just cuz i find htem more comfortabkle.

i think its fun. people say i look scary

For self-mage & self perception, for rebellion, to fit in... they all seem to be poor excuses for doing something. Why do so many people do the things they do in order to get a reaction from someone else?

Harris and Klebold weren't even part of the 'trenchcoat mafia' (group of friends who hung out and played video games) just friends with a few people in it. I like mine personally, although it's a bit older so more of an overcoat/topcoat really, no epaulettes. It has a faux fur lining for the winter and is light enough to work as a jacket for a good while too. London Fog really knows how to make a coat. It covers most of me when it rains and I love how it flows in a breeze.

---
Scott why do you consider those to be poor excuses? Understanding yourself and your relationship to the world would seem like a very good reason to behave a certain way. There are many aspects to everything you interact with in the world beyond their utilitarian purpose. I certainly wouldn't say this is inherintly a bad thing. To be honest I hate PoMo aesthetics, with few exceptions. The Piazza San Pietro is a Baroque work that serves to hold a large gathering of people (inefficiently given the site, Bernini could have gotten more square footage), but also, due to being baroque, to give a grandeur to the sense and vision of the Vatican and to embrace the masses in the arms of mother church. He masterfully manipulated the space to force a controlled reaction out of those who enter it.

Same reason I did back in the early 80's, For self-image & self perception, for rebellion, to fit in... to gain applause from the world as I percieved it and I thought it was cool. I also wore a black fedora, half-gloves and rider's boots embriodered with the Harley Davidson emblem.
I also had a sawed off double-barreled 12-Ga shotgun and model 29 44 S&W that rounded things out (packed on occasion). Real nice getup... 3 rounds of 44 in a bar ceiling gets people's attention and the guy that was in my face turned totally white and took off like a jack rabbit.
Never did time for that one though. I call that era of my life my "dark days". Wonder I wasn't found dead in some alley somewhere.

The trench coat is nothing more than a gimmick. The hippie's long hair, the "in" hair styles of youth at any time past, the piercings, (I had one ear pierced too), ... all that stuff, the same thing. It's to get a feeling of both "individuality" and "belonging". How that works I don't know but it kinda appeals to something within you. Rebellion of any kind I gasped hold of... the word "rebel" has a certain appeal and being negative in all things gives one an air of intelligence. The bars are full of intellects. I know, I studied hard there.

So the media latches onto the "signs" of rebellion, the old folks go nuts  and the young are like, "Hey dawg!" :smt109

Don't even ride a motorcycle.

:-D

ohh ya same with motorcycles. If you ride a motorcylce, you are instantly 250+ pounbds, a lonely, roughneck biker, who spends more time in prison than in the local saloon.

grr.

Scott why do you consider those to be poor excuses? Understanding yourself and your relationship to the world would seem like a very good reason to behave a certain way.

Understanding that you need to wear certain clothes to feel accepted or noticed or feared... thats a good reason to do something?!? Perception and reality aren't always alligned.

People are bred to be shallow and superficial in this world. Let's keep up with the Jones' and covet other people's possessions... idolize celebrities because of their appearance or their image... condition ourselves to mark up our bodies with tattoos because people will see us tuff and cool. With all that kind of training is it any wonder why so many can't even see past the color of somebody else's skin?

Linking this back with the guy wearing a trench coat though, if he were to say to me "I wear a trench coat because I don't catch a draft up my back in the winter time".... I'd say that makes a lot of sense to me. I guess my point is to look at it from outside the box. I think its important that we check our motives and understand why we do the things we do. Self evaluation never hurt anyone.

Oh, that is SO untrue lol

I try to avoid those type of stereotypes.

I think peace4all was being sarcastic.
Yet, the entertainment industry indoctrinates such views to turn a buck. The tough guy image or thug to-be-feared is a fantasy some people wish to live, to have power over others either through fear, a joe-cool image or "I can, you can't, too bad" approach.

yes vic, i was beign sarcastic lol.
I have many older friends, who dont drink, have never been in trouble with the law, that still ride harleys and such. I have some that look like bikers, with leather and wallet chains and bandanas, but again, no trouble with the law, and they dont even ride a motorcylce!

the media has destroyed the ability to wear clothes.
You dress in dark clothes, you are instantly a goth teen that cuts themselves
you dress like a biker, you instnatly are a thug
you wear tie dye, you must smolke pot
you dress in American Eagle and Abercombie with your brand new Nike/puma's and you are a prep.

Its really crappy./

.

peace4all, haven't you studied any behavioral psychology at all?

Oh just think of it!

A female wanting to dress in clad flimsy clothing which exposes parts of her body that are guaranteed to arouse a man with lust-filled thoughts. And then she gets ticked off because the men make sexual advances and propositions toward her and she insists that he control his nasty thoughts and calls him a pervert because she thinks her provocative dress makes no difference in what is being conveyed to others. She thinks she can dress any way she darn well pleases and if anyone doesn't like it that's just too bad. And she struts off all feeling justified and righteous in the way she dresses. Why after all... she ain't no tramp! :x She is a decent girl who happens to like dressing that way because she likes her sexuality and she happens to think it's cool to dress as sexy as she wants at any time she wants and anywhere she wants to. So there! take that you pervert, get a grip you perv, she says.

Go figure, she then gets in a huffy and continues to think... Geez, oh man! she can't even dress the way she wants! because people think the wrong thoughts about her! Go figure!!!! She just can't figure out these people. :sad She thinks they are the ones who are all screwed up.

Sheesh! and to think... some people think it's all the media's fault. Yeah right! Give me a break! :-? It is not always their fault... In all actuality.... They just know what a perverse society wants and likes....

The media may have an influence on some things but in the end of it all, the accountability and the responsibility of how we present ourselves to society is ours.

And In general.... society is conservative when it comes to wanting to be in the public mainly "during business hours" and in conservative/family oriented situations, and occasions.

The night life, and the wild side of life... well, that's another story! :-? And it seems that is a whole other world in regards to social life of some people. That is.... if you are liberal and have no regard for the truth about what types of presentation provokes what type of attention.

Does anyone suppose the bible is all wrong in describing the woman who is clad with enticing forms of dress in order to lure a man? Or the bible is all wrong in describing how to tell a wolf from the sheep? It is all evident, and the dress will not hide the true spirit of a man. It will camouflage it, but it will not hide it. The clothes you wear do make impressions. Like it or not!

No difference for the male or female who dresses in certain attire to get their message across! They want to look the part. But what good does that do if they give the wrong impression in the first place by dressing inappropriately to the truth of what they want to express? Yes, dress makes all the difference in the message you are trying to get across!

Some examples:
A friend of mine was invited to a costume party.... He dressed as a geek, greased his hair, and wore thick glasses, and had placed a plastic pen holders with a few ink pens in the pocket of his white shirt.
And to think! No one talked to him the whole night!

If I dressed as a nerd with white medical tape holding my glasses in place because I couldn't afford to buy a new pair, would many people talk to me?

IF I dressed as a whore in very provocative clothing and walked in such a suggestive way down the street.... would perverts try to solicit me?

If I dressed as a millionaire and rented a porsche and pretended I was rich.... would I attract all kinds of people to me that wanted to make friends with me?

If I dressed as a geek or nerd or dweeb, or dork, or what others thought wasn't cool to them.....and I was seeking a modeling job for some expensive clothing store, would I get hired? Would someone actually come to my aid and teach me how to dress in a trench coat so I didn't look so poorly dressed, but I looked cool instead? :o

GIVE ME BREAK!
Even though a person doesn't think they are dressing as a stereo-ed type, they really are. In fact, dressing to get a message across, be it for their own sense of what it's worth, or for gaining the attention of another. They are still dressing as a stereo type. Everything has a stereo type attached to it. Even if you change your dress, you are still dressed as a stereo type. Society just does that automatically.
And Like it or not... the way you dress, the way you act, and the way you express yourself, it all has a very profound effect on those around you!

The webs we weave to deceive or ignore, in spite of the truth of it... Aye?

This is no different than the notions of those people who seem to think sound has no effect on the nervous system, the emotions or the ears of the human body!
And geez! Why in the world would anyone want to restrict the use of an exclamation mark in a message board? :o

After all.... what harm can it do to use one here or there? And what's the harm in using ALL CAPS?
IT DOESN"T ALWAYS MEAN I AM YELLING. Really, like all I want to do is get some attention and be noticed. If not for the sake of attracting others.... all I wanted to do was "EMPHASIZE" for my own sense of what it was worth..... After all...... Visual effects shouldn't have anything to do with anything and neither should any means of how I choose to express myself have any effect on anyone, be it in the form of sound or expressions of various forms of attitude!
YEAH! RIGHT! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!

Stop kidding yourself, thinking that visuals and sounds and words and various means of expression don't matter!!!!!!!!!!! Because they do!!!!!!!!

Oh, I wasn't yelling..... I was just expressing

:-? :) :P :-D :o :-? 8-)  :P :silly:

Get the point?

IT REALLY DOES MATTER!!!

How you dress makes all the difference in the world.
Like it or not, it does make a huge difference on what message is being conveyed to people.
So you may as well stop trying to act as if it doesn't, because it does.

Time to grow up and realize... the world isn't going to change because a person likes to wear a trench coat out of season. And the world isn't going to change just because a person like to dress like a geek, or not.
Each thing in life has it's stigma attached to it! Like it or not.
The whole of life is not some costume party. There is an appropriate time and place for everything. Like it or not.

Rebels are not going to change the world because they think it's cool to dress whatever way they want at any time they want in any place they want. And sad to say, these types of people, most often they do it unconsciously or out of ignorance as to what is the actual effect of their form of expression, in terms of dress or attitude or action has on others, and themselves.
They know not what they do to themselves or to others and they nay pay attention to what they are breeding within themselves or projecting out towards others either. They have no idea as to what impressions they make or leave in their tracks. They have no foresight to what they do to themselves or others around them. They live carelessly in many regards.

more examples:
IF like to wear sweat pants around the house... does it mean I'll wear them when company comes over or when I go on a job interview, or if I go to a wedding! Get a clue! Life is not going to conform to the likes those few who think they can dress any way they want anytime they want. Grow up already! Sheesh!
So now, are you going to think I'm a witch with a capital B just because you may have thought that I expressed myself inappropriately to you, even though I may think I did no such thing? But don't you know.... I put on a character. Putting on character isn't much different than wearing certain types of clothing. Costume IS clothing. No different than attitude is clothing of the spirit of man. Society isn't going to conform to the one who is out of place to what society thinks is the norm for the appropriate situations and times and places. Like it or not.

Get the point?

Can't fit a square peg into a round hole no matter how hard you rebel or go against that fact.

:changes:

And this message may even bother some of you because of all the elaborate emphasis. Should I conform to better accommodate the whole of society on this board? Would that be considerate of me? Or am I bound to go by the rules of society of this board so as to not offend anyone? Get the point yet? It's all about forethought and consideration of others as a whole. Sorry, but rebels just don't fit in. They don't call them rebellious for nothing, or outlaws, or outcasts, or odd balls, for nothing. You can't fit a square peg into a round hole. Get the point? Stigma is the name of the game in all of society. Sorry, but in reality.... Majority rules. Like it or not.

You will be assimilated! or you will remain a rebel and an outcast.... All cultures are like that, all companies are like that and all of society is like that. Why do you think there is such a variety in this world? Because not all people are going to conform to just your view of how it should be. God made a variety of people and no communistic ideal is going to alter the differences in people. And so we find ourselves in a world full of people living in harmonious situations as well as finding ourselves in a world full of opposing forces.

So trench coat or not.... there's always someone who will be in opposition to your point of view. And that is why I am working on taking a break from this place. Too much opposition :smt021 is not what it takes for making a good balance in life.

Harmony... sweet harmony... where fore art thou? oh sweet harmony. :smt052 :smt057

Relic,

That really hit home. Thanks for your fantastic post.
BTW, thanks for sharing the story about how women dress and act. It made a lot of sense.

I sorta agree relic.

But I dont wear a trench coat to fit in. I don't wear it to be liek "hey, i cut myself and do drugs and hate life"

I wear it because it is comfortable, It has r4easonabel sized pockets, it is VERY warm, and, with my five eights cap on, I look good to peopel aged 50+

Woman unconsciously wear clothign to show themselves off, and then when caught on it, they get pissed. No one wears hooker clothes for comfort.

I just. I wish trench coats still had the same appeal they had years ago. Not as that of a mass murderer, bu that of a hardworking guy.
