I went to Hong Kong and China to meet my relatives (I'm Chinese). Since I cant speak Chinese I only spoke English

My Mom trying to teach me "street smarts" said "Moenie Engels praat want mense sal weet dat jy nie van Hong Kong kom nie!"
(Afrikaans : Don't speak English because people will know you don't come from Hong Kong!")

Out of respect I never said anything but thought "Jy vergeet niemand hier praat Afrikaans)
(You forgot, no one here speaks Afrikaans)

Very true. Although it didn't help much .
My inability yo speak Chinese gave me away as being a westerner
