Trying to quit smoking

I have been trying very hard to quick smoking. I learned that I have to have realistic expectations - quitting isn't easy, but it's not impossible either. More than 3 million Americans quit every year.

Understand that withdrawal symptoms are TEMPORARY. They usually last only 1-2 weeks.

Know that most relapses occur in the first week after quitting, when withdrawal symptoms are strongest and your body is still dependent on nicotine. Be aware that this will be your hardest time, and use all your personal resources - willpower, family, friends, and the tips in this booklet - to get you through this critical period successfully.
Know that most other relapses occur in the first 3 months after quitting, with situational triggers - such as a particularly stressful event - occur unexpectedly. These are the times when people reach for cigarettes automatically, because they associate smoking with relaxing. This is the kind of situation that's hard to prepare yourself for until it happens, so it's especially important to recognize it if it does happen. Remember that smoking is a habit, but a habit you can break.

Realize that most successful ex-smokers quit for good only after several attempts. You may be one of those who can quit your first try. But if you're not, DON'T GIVE UP. Try again.

I had smoked and drank for a number of years. I do not know which was harder to stop !

It took a long time to stop. I did this before I was saved.
I talked myself into saying over in my mind , I am going to die if I do not stop !
And that finally worked, [But it was very hard] since I was really afraid of dying .
Some how I made up a story and cant remember what I told myself. But I believed it since I was so
afraid of death.
I did it , only after a year I made a big mistake ! My husband had a cigarette and I asked him for a
drag. He said are you sure, yea, whats a drag going to do ? Well , the next day I had the whole
cigarette. And was hooked again. So I had to do it all over again. This time I did not try it again.
That was back when they only cost 25cents. And I do not drink or smoke any more. But I will not
give up my coffee ! I don't think ?

One day 2 years ago God stopped me from smoking I had started in 1966. And do you know that I can jog without getting to winded.

How's it going with the quit smoking plan? Just seeing if you are still trying to quit, or have succeeded.
If you quit I guess you'd still have your coffin, but you might be able to quit coughin' :lol

Just quit, I did one day. The first three months are the hardest, after that its like an alcoholic one day at a time. :)

Oh yes, and I live in a house full of smokers. Well my son, and daughter-in-law, that's two out of four.

I was just passing by when I noticed this line and it made me think. It is often said that the first three months of working out are the hardest.

It's interesting that it takes as long to break a bad habit as to develop a good one.
