Ubuntu Linux Error?

I don't know what happened. But when my mom turned on the computer last night after she un-installed a program called 4Sync. Which is in no way related to Ubuntu. I decided to install that afterwards. Then decided it was useless and she was annoyed by it so I had it un-installed for her. Then a few minutes later I looked at the screen and it was black background with a bunch of white text scrolling down the screen kind of like a command prompt only there we no commands for you to do. Just showing a process. I asked her what she did and she said "I was just trying to get on the computer." So after it was over I figured everything was fine until I tried getting on this morning and when I selected Ubuntu, (I run in dual-boot for the sake of the rest of the family.) I got a GRUB command prompt. It says tab will give me a list of possible commands. Anybody know what this is (I assume it has something to do with boot because its GRUB.) I never got to the login screen or loading screen or anything. No Ubuntu boot up screen. Just a near immediate GRUB command line/command prompt. Can anybody help me out here? I have some work/projects on there so I would hate to un-install. I don't think thats what I have to do. But if it is I guess I will re-install.. Oh by the way its Ubuntu 12.04, The newest.

Don't reinstall just yet. Rather, boot up on your Linux CD and run as a "live CD". Your computer will run slower than normal, but will run. Then.... run a boot repair. this issue sounds like what was already posted just recently here:

At least from your description is my understanding. Keep in mind that Linux is not like windows where "uninstalling and reinstalling" the OS is not necessary. Chances are your OS is fine and something is just not firing up right. If you are using Linux, you have to break the Microsoft habits because it's nothing like it. :lol Also, try to do a search specifically listing the symptoms you have. Chances are someone else had the same thing and oftentimes you will be directed to a forum or an app that can be installed (yes, even with live CD!) that will repair your issue.

For everyone else out there: in Linux there is no registry, there is no safe mode, there's only GUI and command prompt. The Registry in Microsoft is what causes it's virus and compatibility issues and "safe" mode is the way to bypass their idiotic software design to get a fix. :toofunny

Tim has done you right and the best I can add without a better run down on this is to point you to the ubuntu forums, just google ubuntu and look into the ubuntu division of linux Questions. Your fastest answers will come from the LQ forum.

I went to one of their IRC channels and i figured it out. I installed with wubi, And it is very fragile and easy to break. Not to mention how windows is likely corrupting the important Grub files. Ill have to re-install if I want to keep using it. I didn't use a live cd I used wubi so no boot repair is availible. I probably wont even bother because I think this is the 2-3rd time that this has happened. I think windows keeps going into my important Grub files and deleting them or modifying them. That can do damage when wubi is already super fragile. Next time I want one I will just use a Live CD or USB.

:toofunny I suspected a windows issue but I stopped short in this thread of actually blaming them. Finger pointing is not going to help solve your problem, but I wanted you to find a solution. Besides, people are tired of hearing me bash Windows all the time, but I can't help it. :lol

For the few critics out there that haven't used Linux in awhile and claim it's hard to use, I found with my recent experience that there are apps, forum answers and other such tools you can use to repair problems automatically. Actually, I don't consider myself a Linux Guru by any stretch, but I still figured it out without racking my brains out, and it looks like you have, too. Sorry to hear of the apparent incompatibility with the Windows, but this is why I once suggested keeping a desktop for each OS. Dedicate one to Linux and the other to Microsoft despite the supposed dual boot capability. I've never read anything good trying to dual boot with Microsoft, and frankly I don't have any experience. One day I just went cold turkey and ditched the Microsoft I had my fill of them.
